ISO 9889:1994 defines a laboratory method for determining carbon content in uranium dioxide (UO2) powder and sintered pellets. The method uses resistance-furnace combustion to oxidize a sample and quantifies evolved CO2 by titrimetric (potentiostatic), coulometric or infrared absorption detection. The procedure is applicable to measuring 5 µg to 500 µg of carbon per sample and includes measures to prevent interference from sulfur and halogens using dedicated traps.

Calibration & controls: Use certified reference steels (SRMs) for calibration; run blanks and absorption efficiency checks (target Aeff > 95%).

Precision: Repeatability for two independent results by one analyst should not exceed 2 µg/g or 5% of the carbon content, whichever is greater.

Reporting: Report the method variant, sample description, results and units, and any deviations or unusual observations.
