Specifies a laboratory test using a nickel-alloy probe for the determination of the cooling characteristics of industrial quenching oils. The test is conducted in non-agitated oils and thus is able to rank the cooling characteristics of the different oils under standard conditions.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 9950:1995 - Industrial quenching oils: Determination of cooling characteristics - Nickel‑alloy probe test method specifies a laboratory procedure for ranking the cooling behavior of industrial quenching oils using a cylindrical nickel‑alloy probe with a central thermocouple. The method records probe temperature versus time during a non‑agitated quench to derive cooling rates and characteristic cooling curves under repeatable, standard conditions. It is intended for comparative evaluation and quality control of quenching oils, not for direct prediction of performance in agitated industrial quench tanks.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test principle: Heat a nickel‑alloy probe to the specified soak temperature, transfer it into a fixed volume of quenching oil, and record the centre temperature as a function of time. Compute cooling rate vs temperature by differentiation.
- Thermal probe: Cylindrical nickel‑alloy probe (nominal 12.5 mm diameter, 60 mm length) with a mineral‑insulated Type K (NiCr–NiAl) thermocouple located at the geometric centre; support tube and sheath materials specified (e.g., Inconel).
- Heating and transfer: Resistance‑heated furnace maintaining 850 °C ± 5 °C in the heating zone; transfer from furnace to oil in ≤ 2 s (preferably automated).
- Measurement system: Thermocouple sampling and digitization (computer technique) or Y–t/X–Y recorder with electronic differentiator. Minimum sampling frequency of 20 Hz is required when using digital acquisition. Differentiator and recorder performance and calibration requirements are specified to control bias, linearity and repeatability.
- Reference quenching fluid: A straight‑run, high‑viscosity‑index paraffinic mineral oil (additive‑free) is recommended for probe cross‑checks; storage and renewal rules apply (renew after 200 quenches or two years, whichever is sooner).
- Probe conditioning and maintenance: Initial conditioning via dummy quenches, cleaning procedures, and reconditioning criteria (e.g., recondition when maximum cooling rate deviates by > ±5% from conditioned value).
Applications and users
ISO 9950:1995 is used by:
- Heat‑treatment and metallurgical laboratories for quench media evaluation and quality control
- Quenching oil manufacturers and formulators for product characterization and R&D
- Industrial users (automotive, bearing, toolmaking) comparing oil types or monitoring oil degradation
- Independent testing laboratories and standards organizations requiring reproducible cooling‑rate data
