This document specifies requirements for the qualification of operators of laser metal powder bed fusion machines and equipment for additive manufacturing in aerospace applications. This document is applicable if the operator qualification testing is required by contract or by application standards in the field of aerospace.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/ASTM 52942:2020 establishes qualification principles for operators of laser metal powder bed fusion (L-PBF) machines used in aerospace additive manufacturing. It specifies requirements for theoretical and practical testing, vision acuity, certification content, and validity conditions where operator qualification is required by contract or application standards.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and coordinator: A designated coordinator with relevant L-PBF experience must oversee qualification, requalification and disqualification activities.
- Three-part assessment:
- Theoretical test - multiple‑choice exam (minimum 20 questions) with a passing score of at least 80%. Content areas are listed in Annex A (safety, process fundamentals, parameters, functions, maintenance).
- Practical test - hands‑on demonstration following a qualified Additive Manufacturing Procedure Specification (APS) or Preliminary APS (PAPS) (Annex B and D provide guidance). Advanced skills can be recorded on the certificate when demonstrated.
- Visual acuity - near vision and colour perception checks; near vision testing options include Jaeger No.2 or Visus 0.8 (tested at least every 2 years), colour perception at least every 6 years.
- Essential variables and ranges:
- Powder material groups (A–F): operators are qualified per material group (e.g., steels, titanium alloys, aluminum, nickel alloys, etc.). Qualification in one group does not transfer to others.
- Machine model: qualification is specific to the machine manufacturer and model tested.
- Certification:
- Certificates must list name/identifier, machine model(s), material group(s), trained advanced skills, vision limitations, issue and expiry dates, and examiner signature. A sample format is in Annex C.
- Validity: certificates are valid for 2 years. Requalification is required if inactive >6 months on the qualified machine, if performance concerns arise, or at expiry.
- Supplementary testing: used to add machine models, materials or skills without changing the original certificate validity.
Practical applications and users
Who uses this standard:
- Aerospace manufacturers and suppliers implementing L‑PBF processes
- Production operators and machine technicians
- Training coordinators, examiners and examining bodies
- Quality, compliance and procurement teams specifying operator competence in contracts How it helps:
- Ensures consistent operator competence for safety, repeatability and part quality
- Provides a clear framework for training, assessment and certification tied to material groups and machine types
