ISO/IEC 14543-5-1:2010(E) series specifies the services and protocol of the application layer for use by IGRS Devices in the Home Electronic System. An IGRS Device (Intelligent Grouping and Resource Sharing Device) includes the communications protocol specified in the multiple parts of ISO/IEC 14543-5. The objective of this document is to enable resource sharing and service collaboration among computers, consumer electronics, and communication devices in a Local Area Network (LAN) or Personal Area Network (PAN) environment, especially in a wireless dynamic network.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 14543-5-1:2010 defines the application-layer services and core protocol for Intelligent Grouping and Resource Sharing (IGRS) within the Home Electronic System (HES) architecture. The standard targets Class 2 and Class 3 IGRS devices and is designed to enable resource sharing and service collaboration among computers, consumer electronics and communication devices across LANs and PANs - particularly in wireless dynamic networks. It prescribes message formats, device/service descriptions, grouping and discovery mechanisms, session and security handling to support interoperable smart home ecosystems.
Key Topics
- IGRS Core Protocol & Architecture: Application-layer framework and interaction model for IGRS devices, including conformance rules and how the IGRS profile maps to device behavior.
- Device and Service Description: Templates and identifiers for device, service, client and user descriptions to enable consistent discovery and capability exchange.
- Device Grouping & Pipe Management: Mechanisms for forming device groups (peer-to-peer and centralized), creating/unsecure and secure device pipes, trust relationships and group lifecycle (join, dismiss, secession).
- Service Discovery & Advertisement: Multicast and proxy-based discovery methods (specified ISDP in Annex A), service online/offline advertisement, registration and search procedures.
- Session & Resource Sharing: Session setup/teardown conditions, service invocation request/response flows and event notification/subscription models for online/offline events.
- Message Framework & Security: Request/response message structures, secure-device-pipe support with message authentication and encryption options; normative details for secure message handling and status codes.
- Normative Annexes: ISDP (IGRS service discovery protocols) and description document formats (Annex B) for interoperable implementation.
Applications and Who Uses It
Practical use cases:
- Smart home interoperability: Enabling TVs, gateways, sensors, controllers and appliances to discover and share services in a home network.
- IoT device collaboration: Resource sharing among consumer electronics and computing devices in dynamic wireless environments.
- Home automation platforms: Implementing reliable discovery, session management and secure control for automation scenarios.
Typical users:
- Device manufacturers and firmware engineers implementing IGRS-capable products
- Home automation integrators and solution architects
- IoT platform developers and middleware vendors
- Test labs and certification bodies validating conformance to HES/IGRS profiles
