ISO/IEC 14543-5-3:2012(E) defines design criteria and application requirements enabled by the relevant application profiles. It also defines required or optional interaction processes, interaction interfaces, software and hardware interfaces and the software framework that may or may not be specified by the existing application profiles related to the IGRS basic applications. It is applicable to computers, household appliances and communication devices that implement media data streaming by wired or wireless means.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 14543-5-3:2012 defines the basic application framework for Intelligent Grouping and Resource Sharing (IGRS) within the Home Electronic System (HES) architecture for HES Class 2 and Class 3 devices. It specifies design criteria, application requirements, and interaction models enabled by IGRS application profiles to support media data streaming over wired or wireless home networks. The standard targets interoperability at the application level for devices such as media servers, media clients (TVs, set-top boxes), computers, household appliances and communication devices that implement digital media forwarding, storage and playback.
Key Topics and Requirements
- IGRS basic application framework: Defines a list of basic applications, operation details (device grouping, service description templates), function definitions and service invocation interfaces.
- Interaction model and conformance: Requires implementations to follow the IGRS interaction model and system design criteria described in Clause 5; conformance guidelines ensure consistent behavior among media clients, servers and recorders.
- Media forwarding, storage and playback: Describes media interaction flows and the required processes for streaming, storage and playback systems (Clause 6).
- Software and hardware interfaces: Specifies required or optional software profiles, invocation interfaces and hardware/network interfaces to enable interoperability (software profile, media formats, network interfaces, media client interfaces).
- IGRS components: Introduces concepts such as the IGRS Dynamic Service Invocation Module (IGRSDSIM), IGRS Services, Media Client (MC) and Media Server (MS).
- Protocol relationships: Aligns with IGRS Core Protocol (Part 5-1) which uses TCP/IP and HTTP as the message exchange framework and references application profiles (AV profile, File profile) for service-level behavior.
- Applicability: Applicable to devices implementing media streaming by wired or wireless means and intended as an implementation guideline to ensure application-level interoperability.
Practical Applications
- Enabling multi-room audio/video streaming and synchronized playback across grouped devices.
- Standardizing discovery, description and invocation of shareable media services in smart homes.
- Implementing media servers (NAS/PC) and media clients (smart TVs, set-top boxes) that interoperate across vendors.
- Supporting developers of home automation, consumer electronics and media applications to create IGRS-compliant products.
Who Should Use This Standard
- Firmware and application developers for consumer electronics, smart TVs, set‑top boxes and NAS devices.
- System integrators and product architects designing home media streaming and resource-sharing solutions.
- Test labs and QA teams validating conformance to IGRS basic application behavior.
