ISO/IEC 14776-453:2009(E) defines the SCSI commands that are mandatory and optional for all SCSI devices. Support for any feature defined in this standard is optional unless otherwise stated. This standard also defines the SCSI commands that may apply to any device model.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 14776-453:2009 - also published as SPC-3 - is Part 453 of the SCSI family of standards that defines the primary SCSI commands used by SCSI device servers and initiators. The standard enumerates mandatory and optional commands, specifies command formats and response behavior, and describes features that may apply across device models. Support for features is optional unless explicitly stated. SPC-3 (2009) is intended for implementers needing a formal reference for SCSI command behavior, error reporting, and device-model commonalities.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Command Descriptor Block (CDB): fixed and variable length CDB formats, common fields (operation code, service action, logical block address, transfer length, allocation length, control).
- Request-response model: command sequencing, data field requirements, ASCII and padding rules.
- Sense data formats: descriptor and fixed formats, sense keys, current vs deferred errors, and detailed sense-data descriptors.
- Model common to all device types: commands implemented by all SCSI servers, recommended commands, and usage guidance for INQUIRY, REPORT LUNS, TEST UNIT READY, and REQUEST SENSE.
- Self-test operations: default, short and extended self-tests and modes (foreground/background).
- Reservations and Persistent Reservations: registration, reserving, releasing, preempting, moving reservations, preserving registrations across power loss, and reporting reservation keys.
- Multiple target/initiator port behavior and asymmetric logical unit access (ALUA): target port group access states and discovery mechanisms.
- Normative references and conventions (terms, acronyms, bit/byte ordering).
Practical applications
- Implementing SCSI device firmware and controller logic that conforms to standard SCSI primary commands.
- Developing host drivers, OS storage stacks, and multipath software that rely on standardized command and sense semantics.
- Interoperability and conformance testing for storage devices (LUN reporting, reservation handling, error reporting).
- Designing enterprise storage features such as persistent reservations, ALUA-aware multipathing, and self-test diagnostics.
- Documenting expected behaviors for system integrators and QA teams validating SCSI device behavior.
Who uses this standard
- SCSI device manufacturers and firmware engineers
- Operating system kernel and driver developers
- Storage architects and system integrators
- Conformance test labs and QA engineers
- Enterprise storage software developers (multipath, clustering)
