ISO/IEC 14908-1:2012 specifies a communication protocol for local area control networks. The protocol provides peer-to-peer communication for networked control and is suitable for implementing both peer-to-peer and master-slave control strategies. ISO/IEC 14908-1:2012 describes services in layers 2 to 7. In the layer 2 (data link layer) specification, it also describes the Medium Access Control (MAC) sublayer interface to the physical layer. The physical layer provides a choice of transmission media. The interface described in ISO/IEC 14908-1:2012 supports multiple transmission media at the physical layer. In the layer 7 specification, it includes a description of the types of messages used by applications to exchange application and network management data.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 14908-1:2012 - Information technology - Control network protocol - Part 1: Protocol stack defines a layered communication protocol for local area control networks. The standard specifies peer-to-peer communication services across layers 2 to 7, including the MAC sublayer interface to the physical layer and the message types used by applications for exchanging application and network-management data. It supports multiple transmission media at the physical layer and is suitable for both peer-to-peer and master‑slave control strategies.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Layered protocol stack (layers 2–7): Detailed specifications for the MAC sublayer, link, network, transaction control, transport, session, and presentation/application layers.
- MAC sublayer & data link services: Defines MPDU format, MAC-to-physical interface and access method (including a predictive p‑persistent CSMA overview), optional priority and collision detection features.
- Multiple physical media support: The defined interface enables different transmission media at the physical layer.
- Link and transport mechanisms: Link-layer CRC and transmit algorithms; transport layer TPDU types, state variables, send/receive behavior and retry/timer considerations.
- Network layer functions: Address recognition, routing, router behavior, and subnet learning algorithms to support local-area control topologies.
- Transaction, session and security: Transaction control sublayer, session request–response protocols, authentication and encryption algorithm descriptions (protocol-level security primitives and random number requirements are addressed).
- Application services & network variables: APDU/SPDU/NPDU formats, network variable processing, and offline request‑response messaging semantics.
- Network management & diagnostics: Node states, management services, NMPDU/DPDU formats, router management commands and procedures for configuration, download, diagnostics and error handling.
Practical applications and users
ISO/IEC 14908-1:2012 is used where reliable, deterministic local control networking is required, including:
- Building and facility automation (HVAC, lighting, access control)
- Industrial local control systems and device networks
- Smart-building and IoT device manufacturers implementing control protocols
- System integrators and network engineers designing control-area topologies and routers
- Firmware and embedded software developers implementing protocol stacks for control devices
Users adopt this standard to ensure interoperable, peer-to-peer control messaging, robust network management and support for multiple physical media.
