This document specifies a lexicon of objects for the interoperability domain (ID). This document specifies ID base objects and their associated properties and input/output event types (i.e. in the form of a list of ID sensor, actuator, and control objects), and object state actions, which can be used to define interoperable application models.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 18012-3:2025 - Information technology - Home electronic system (HES) - Guidelines for product interoperability - Part 3: Lexicon defines a standardized lexicon for the HES interoperability domain (ID). The standard specifies ID base objects and their associated properties, input/output event types (sensor, actuator, control objects), and object state actions to support interoperable application models for smart homes and connected devices.
This document is intended to unify semantics and event encoding for Home Electronic Systems (HES), enabling consistent representation of device capabilities across HAN/WAN interfaces, services, and remote objects.
Key Topics and Requirements
- HES lexicon scope: A comprehensive list of user objects, binding map objects, service objects, interface objects, remote objects, and actions used in the interoperability domain.
- Object models: Definitions of object components and common structures (e.g., currentValue, previousValue, compareValue) for reliable state representation.
- Event and action encoding: Rules for communicating functional actions and event types across media and interfaces to ensure consistent behavior across devices.
- Conventions and data handling: Data formats, memory storage and access types, address and data types to support deterministic encoding and decoding.
- Binding map and value operations: Mathematical/logical operations, conditioning, adjustment, operation and addressing tables to map, transform, and bind inputs/outputs between objects.
- Interface modules: HAN and WAN interface object models, discovery, central operations, privacy, security and traffic handling; includes a WAN interface module annex.
- Service definitions: Foundational services such as identification, time, authorization/authentication, cryptographic services, common UI, energy management, and others.
- Conformance: Requirements and provisions for demonstrating compliance with the lexicon and interoperability rules.
- Semantic meaning and examples: Normative and informative annexes explaining semantic mapping, service examples (e.g., authorization scenarios) and domain-specific lexicons (lighting, HVAC, energy management, EV, security).
Applications and Who Uses It
ISO/IEC 18012-3 is practical for:
- Device manufacturers implementing standardized object models for sensors, actuators and controllers in smart home products.
- Platform and gateway developers building HAN/WAN interfaces and HES gateways with interoperable modules.
- System integrators and installers ensuring mixed-vendor deployment interoperability.
- Firmware and application developers mapping device states and events to application models.
- Test labs and certification bodies validating conformance to HES interoperability lexicons.
- Energy management, lighting, HVAC, security and EV solution providers who need consistent object definitions for cross-device coordination.
