ISO/IEC 18046-4:2015 defines test methods for performance characteristics of HF RFID gates in libraries for item management and specifies the general requirements and test requirements for HF RFID gates in libraries which are applicable to the selection of the gates for an application. The summary of the test reports form a unified tag datasheet. It does not apply to testing in relation to regulatory or similar requirements.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 18046-4:2015 specifies standardized test methods for performance of HF RFID gates in libraries. It defines general requirements and test procedures for high-frequency (13.56 MHz) RFID gate systems used for item management, anti-theft detection and optional visitor counting. The standard is intended to support consistent evaluation and selection of RFID gates; test summaries form a unified tag datasheet. It explicitly does not cover regulatory compliance testing.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test scope and conditions
- Environmental and RF test conditions, pre-conditioning, and limits for test equipment and measurement uncertainty.
- Required test means
- Use of movement apparatus, PC with test software, and reference blocks (tags, tag blocks, tag bundles, media stacks).
- Core performance tests
- Measurement of transmitter carrier H‑field level to quantify magnetic-field strength.
- Detection field homogeneity to map consistent read zones through the passage.
- Reliability of detection (AFI-based procedures), including variants with increased walking speed and multi-tag read scenarios.
- Stack (bundle) performance to assess simultaneous recognition of multiple media.
- Immunity to interference covering both active interferers (electronic devices) and passive metallic interferers (building materials, furniture).
- Test reporting and certification
- Unified reporting format, assessment of complete product tests and certificate generation.
- Operational considerations
- Typical HF gate read range guidance (about 0.5 m to 2 m at 13.56 MHz), constant AFI operating mode during tests, and note of auto-tuning features in some gates.
Practical applications and users
Who benefits from ISO/IEC 18046-4:2015:
- Library operators and procurement teams evaluating gate performance for anti-theft and automated check-in/out.
- RFID gate manufacturers and product designers validating gate detection, stack handling and interference robustness.
- System integrators and installers planning site layout and mitigation for metallic structures or power-line interference.
- Conformity assessment and test laboratories performing standardized performance tests and producing unified tag datasheets. Practical uses include gate selection, acceptance testing, site pre-surveys, and troubleshooting field performance issues (false alarms, missed reads, degraded range).
