This document specifies box-based container format, referred to as JPEG XT, which is designed primarily for continuous-tone photographic content.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 18477-3:2023, "Information technology - Scalable compression and coding of continuous‑tone still images - Part 3: Box file format", specifies a box-based container format (commonly called JPEG XT) designed primarily for continuous‑tone photographic content. The standard defines how extensible data structures called boxes are embedded into legacy JPEG codestreams (via APP marker segments) to carry extra image data and metadata - enabling higher bit depths, high‑dynamic‑range (HDR) images, alpha channels and decoding guidance while remaining backwards compatible with Rec. ITU‑T T.81 | ISO/IEC 10918‑1 legacy JPEG decoders.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Box syntax and embedding: Defines the box file format and how boxes are inserted into APP marker segments of a legacy JPEG codestream so legacy decoders can still reconstruct a standard low‑dynamic range (LDR) image.
- Backward compatibility: Ensures legacy applications decode a compatible 8‑bit per channel LDR image even when extended data (HDR, higher bit depth) is present.
- Scalable decoding paths: Specifies base decoding path (legacy reconstruction) and residual decoding path (to merge extension/residual data for full‑range output).
- Support for extended image types: Allows higher precision (e.g., 16‑bit or greater), HDR content, additional opacity (alpha) channels and wide colour gamut representations.
- Encoder/decoder requirements: High‑level encoder and decoder obligations, conformance language and operator rules to ensure interoperable implementations.
- Auxiliary normative components: Annexes cover JPEG XT marker segment usage, common box types, point transformations, and checksum computation (Annexes A–D).
- Edition update: Second edition (2023) revises the 2015 edition, with editorial improvements on JPEG XT marker segment usage.
Applications and Who Uses It
- Image codec and software developers building JPEG encoders/decoders that need HDR or higher bit‑depth support while preserving legacy compatibility.
- Camera and imaging device manufacturers seeking to store extended image data (wide colour, 16‑bit, HDR, alpha) without breaking existing toolchains.
- Image editing and post‑production tools that can optionally read extended boxes for improved dynamic range and precision.
- Digital archives and media distribution requiring efficient scalable compression with an upgrade path for future display capabilities.
- Web, broadcasting and mobile services that want progressive compatibility across a wide range of decoders.
