ISO/IEC 19505-2:2012 defines the Unified Modeling Language (UML), revision 2. The objective of UML is to provide system architects, software engineers, and software developers with tools for analysis, design, and implementation of software-based systems as well as for modeling business and similar processes.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 19505-2:2012 specifies the Object Management Group (OMG) Unified Modeling Language (UML) - Part 2: Superstructure, i.e., UML Revision 2. The standard provides a formal, vendor-neutral definition of UML’s modeling constructs, notation and semantics to support consistent modeling of software-based systems and business processes. Its objective is to equip system architects, software engineers and developers with standardized tools for analysis, design and implementation.
Key topics
- UML modeling constructs: formal definitions of core model elements and their relationships to represent structure and behavior.
- Notation and syntax: standardized diagram symbols and textual syntax to ensure consistent visual and semantic interpretation.
- Semantics and well-formedness: rules and constraints that govern model validity and interoperability between tools.
- Behavioral and structural modeling: support for representing architecture, classes, components, interactions, state and activity concepts (as defined in UML Revision 2).
- Extensibility and profiles: mechanisms to adapt UML for domains (e.g., using profiles or stereotypes) while preserving conformance.
- Tool interoperability: foundation for model exchange, consistency checking and integration across modeling tools and platforms.
(Note: ISO/IEC 19505-2 defines the Superstructure part of UML Revision 2; the companion Part 1 specifies the UML infrastructure.)
Applications
ISO/IEC 19505-2 is widely used in practical software and systems engineering contexts:
- Software architecture & design: create clear, standardized models for system components, interfaces and interactions.
- Model-driven development (MDD): author models that can be analyzed, transformed and used for code generation or testing.
- Business process modeling: document processes and workflows with a standardized notation for stakeholders.
- System documentation & communication: produce unambiguous diagrams for cross-team collaboration and reviews.
- Tool vendors & integrators: implement UML-supporting features (diagram editors, validators, import/export) that conform to an international standard.
- Education & certification: teach and assess modeling skills against a recognized industry specification.
Who should use it
- System architects, software engineers and developers
- Business analysts and solution designers
- Modeling tool vendors and integrators
- Project managers and technical leads adopting model-based approaches
- Educators and trainers in software/system engineering
