The primary purpose of the multipart standard ISO/IEC 19763 is to specify a metamodel framework for interoperability. ISO/IEC 19763-7:2015 specifies a metamodel for registering models of services, facilitating interoperability through the reuse of services. ISO/IEC 19763-7:2015 is only applicable to web services whose capabilities are described by some web service description language (see Annex A for examples of such languages). Figure 1 shows the scope of ISO/IEC 19763‑7:2015.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 19763-7:2015 - part of the Metamodel Framework for Interoperability (MFI) - specifies a metamodel for service model registration. Its primary goal is to standardize how web services (whose capabilities are described by a service description language) are registered so they can be discovered, reused and composed in interoperable environments. The standard complements existing registry approaches (for example, ebXML RegRep) by defining a semantic-rich registration metamodel that captures functional and non-functional service information.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Applies only to web services described by a service description language (see Annex A for examples such as WSDL, OWL‑S, WADL, WSML).
- Core metamodel elements: Service, Service_Model, Service_Type, Service_Operation, Input_Message, Output_Message, Message_Type, Precondition, Postcondition, Exit_Condition, QoS_Assertion, QoS_Type, User_Tag, Expression (atomic and composite).
- Logical expressions: Support for atomic and composite expressions (conjunction, disjunction, negation) to represent conditions and QoS constraints.
- Non-functional properties: Formalization of QoS assertions (availability, response time, etc.) and their types to enable machine-processable discovery and selection.
- Conformance: Defines conformance levels (e.g., strictly conforming vs. conforming implementation) and requires an Implementation Conformance Statement (ICS) for registry implementations.
- Inter-part associations: Integrates with other MFI parts (process model registration, role & goal registration, and the MFI core/mapping) to support end-to-end interoperability across models.
- Examples and guidance: Annex B provides worked examples (e.g., WSDL, OWL‑S) showing how service models are registered against the metamodel.
Applications
- Improved service registry and discovery with semantic metadata for accurate, automated matching.
- SOA governance and service lifecycle management by standardizing metadata used in catalogs and repositories.
- Integration platforms, API management, and middleware that require robust service descriptions for composition and orchestration.
- Enabling automated selection of services based on functional constraints and QoS requirements for business process automation.
Who should use this standard
- Enterprise architects, SOA architects, and system integrators building service registries or enhancing discovery.
- Developers of registry/repository products, API management platforms and middleware vendors.
- Standards bodies and organizations aligning service metadata across federated systems.
