Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 21000-2:2005/Amd 1:2012 is an international standard amendment under the Multimedia Framework (MPEG-21) series, specifically addressing Part 2: Digital Item Declaration. This amendment introduces enhancements related to the presentation of digital items, focusing on how structured multimedia content is described and presented within digital items. Developed by ISO and IEC, this standard provides a framework for defining the presentation metadata essential for interoperable multimedia applications and services.
The amendment extends the Digital Item Declaration Model with a new presentation descriptor, enabling consistent and flexible representation of digital item presentations. It supports inline presentation information as well as references to remote presentation resources, ensuring adaptability in environments with diverse multimedia delivery requirements.
Key Topics
-
Digital Item Declaration Model Extension Introduction of a specific Descriptor type named presentation to describe multimedia scene representations within a digital item. This descriptor can contain either well-formed XML or a reference (pointer) to remote presentation information.
-
Presentation Descriptor Attributes
precedenceattribute: Indicates whether this presentation has priority over others.mimeTypeattribute: Specifies the media type of the presentation content using standard MIME types, e.g., "application/x-laser+xml" for LASeR XML or "image/svg+xml" for SVG.
-
Presentation Content Flexibility The presentation information can be embedded directly within the digital item or linked via a URI in the
refattribute, allowing for both local and remote content delivery models. -
Metadata Referencing Support for referencing metadata within the same digital item or from remote digital items using the
mpeg-pmsi()schema as defined in ISO/IEC 14496-20:2008/Amd.3:2010, enabling enhanced integration and metadata management. -
Namespace and Syntax The presentation extension uses the namespace
urn:mpeg:mpeg21:2010:02-DIDL-P-NSwith prefixdidl-p, and is structured to be an extension of the existing Descriptor element. This maintains compatibility with MPEG-21 Digital Item Declaration Language (DIDL).
Applications
-
Multimedia Content Delivery Facilitates standardized descriptions of the presentation layer within digital multimedia content, enabling consistent playback and rendering across heterogeneous platforms and devices.
-
Digital Rights Management & Metadata Integration By allowing rich metadata referencing and flexible presentation descriptions, this amendment supports complex content management scenarios including rights control and cross-referencing of multimedia assets.
-
Interactive Media and Scene Representation Enables the use of scene representation languages (such as LASeR or SVG XML) within digital items, enhancing support for interactive and immersive multimedia experiences in broadcasting, streaming, and digital publishing.
-
Interoperability in Multimedia Systems The standard’s structured approach helps developers create interoperable multimedia frameworks compliant across systems and applications, reducing fragmentation in multimedia content presentation.
Related Standards
-
ISO/IEC 21000-2:2005 – The base Digital Item Declaration standard defining the core framework for describing digital items.
-
ISO/IEC 14496-20:2008 (and its amendments) – Defines the
mpeg-pmsi()schema used for multimedia metadata referencing, which is leveraged by the presentation mechanism in this amendment. -
IETF RFC 2045 and 2046 – Standards defining MIME media types, fundamental in specifying the content types used in the presentation descriptor.
-
MPEG-21 Multimedia Framework – A suite of standards for multimedia content management and delivery, of which this amendment forms a critical component enabling enhanced presentation capabilities.
This amendment to ISO/IEC 21000-2 builds upon the MPEG-21 framework by offering a standardized and extensible method to describe how digital items are presented in multimedia systems. It is vital for organizations and developers working with digital content creation, management, and distribution who need flexible, interoperable, and metadata-rich presentation solutions within multimedia frameworks.
