Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 21000-4:2006/Amd 2:2012 is an amendment to the international standard ISO/IEC 21000-4, which is part of the MPEG-21 multimedia framework. This amendment specifically addresses the protection of the presentation element within the Intellectual Property Management and Protection (IPMP) components of MPEG-21. The standard is developed by the joint technical committee ISO/IEC JTC 1, Subcommittee SC 29, which focuses on coding of audio, picture, multimedia, and hypermedia information.
The MPEG-21 framework aims to enable transparent and augmented multimedia delivery across a variety of devices and platforms. Part 4 focuses on mechanisms for managing and protecting intellectual property rights in multimedia content. Amendment 2 enhances this by defining a new element for governing protections related to presentation aspects of multimedia content.
Key Topics
-
IPMP DIDL Schema Extension The amendment introduces the
ipmpdidl:Presentationelement within the IPMP DIDL (Digital Item Declaration Language) schema. This element is used to convey rights management and protection information specific to the presentation of digital multimedia items. -
Syntax and Semantics
- The
ipmpdidl:Presentationelement is an extension of the existing DIDLPresentationType, incorporating intellectual property protection governance. - It includes components such as
Identifier,Info,ContentInfo, andContentsto fully describe and govern the protected presentation element.
- The
-
Governance of Presentation Layer By defining the
Presentationelement in the IPMP context, this amendment supports the enforcement of intellectual property rights related to how content is presented, beyond just the raw media data, allowing for more granular and effective protection. -
XML Schema Definition The amendment updates Annex A with new XML schema specifications to support the definition and integration of the
ipmpdidl:Presentationelement, ensuring interoperability within MPEG-21 compliant systems.
Applications
-
Digital Rights Management (DRM) Enables DRM systems to control and protect not only the multimedia content but also its presentation format, ensuring that usage restrictions apply to the rendering, display, or playback environment.
-
Multimedia Publishing Content providers and broadcasters can use this amendment to safeguard the presentation aspects of digital items, such as layout, sequencing, or other presentation parameters that may carry intellectual property value.
-
Secure Content Delivery Streaming services and digital distribution platforms can implement IPMP frameworks enhanced by this amendment to prevent unauthorized alteration or misuse of the presentation element, securing end-user experiences.
-
Interoperable Multimedia Systems Ensures standardized communication and protection mechanisms across diverse devices and software, facilitating consistent enforcement of intellectual property management policies related to multimedia presentations.
Related Standards
