ISO/IEC 23008-11:2015 specifies MPEG Composition Information (CI), a method describing composition information of media for delivery of multimedia services over packet-based heterogeneous networks. The technologies for composition function specify the method associating content delivered in the format defined in this part of ISO/IEC 23008 to the presentation and the method representing synchronization between timed and non-timed content.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 23008-11:2015 specifies MPEG Composition Information (CI) - an XML/HTML5‑based layer for describing how media components are composed, synchronized and presented for delivery of multimedia services over packet‑based heterogeneous networks. CI defines a descriptive model that associates media assets (timed audiovisual and non‑timed data) with HTML5 presentation elements, controls temporal relationships, and supports multi‑screen and context‑dependent presentation in MPEG Media Transport (MMT) environments.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Composition Information (CI) as XML: CI documents are XML files (XML Schema in Annex A) that reference HTML5 elements by ID to control presentation and DOM changes at specified times.
- HTML5 integration: CI complements HTML5 spatial layout and media elements (video, audio, img, track) to enable temporal control and resource association; normative reference to W3C HTML5.
- Temporal and synchronization attributes: The standard defines attributes for timing and clipping such as begin, end, dur, clipBegin, clipEnd, and others to express presentation timing and dependencies.
- Element model: CI elements include top‑level CI, reference, view, area, MediaSync, sourceList and more (see Annex B for examples).
- Multi‑screen and device mapping: CI supports designation of content parts for particular screens and coordination across multiple devices.
- Handling timed vs non‑timed content: Mechanisms represent synchronization between timed media (e.g., video) and non‑timed data (e.g., metadata or interactive resources).
- Processing model: A CI processing engine fetches CI and HTML5 files, updates the DOM, and applies synchronization without requiring bespoke scripting engines.
- Update mechanism and HTML data attributes: Supports CI updates and integration using HTML data attributes (e.g., data-ci, data-version).
Applications and Who Uses It
- Broadcast engineers and OTT platform architects designing hybrid broadcast/IP delivery systems using MPEG Media Transport (MMT).
- CDN and network operators implementing packet‑based delivery with cross‑layer signaling and synchronization.
- Application and web developers building multi‑screen video experiences, synchronized second‑screen apps, or mash‑up services combining assets from multiple sources.
- Standards implementers and test labs creating conformance tools, XML parsers and CI processing engines for multimedia services.
- Typical use cases: synchronized streaming of timed and non‑timed content, multi‑screen presentations, context‑aware content substitution (location/personalization), and efficient media delivery across heterogeneous packet networks.
