The functionality for the QoS Policy Holder service can be implemented by any device on the home network. The QoS Policy Holder service is responsible for providing the traffic policy values for any given traffic stream as requested by an entity that manages home network traffic, typically a QoS Management Entity. The series of ISO/IEC 29341 publications defines an architecture for pervasive peer-to-peer network connectivity of intelligent appliances, wireless devices and PCs. It is designed to bring easy to use, flexible, standards-based connectivity to ad-hoc or unmanaged networks whether in the home, in a small business, public spaces or attached to the Internet.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 29341-11-12:2008 specifies the UPnP Device Architecture Profile for the Quality of Service (QoS) Policy Holder Service - Level 2. It models the QoS Policy Holder function that can run on any device in a home or small-network environment and provides traffic policy values for requested traffic streams. The service is part of the ISO/IEC 29341 (UPnP) series and is compliant with UPnP Device Architecture v1.0.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Service role: The QoS Policy Holder returns traffic policy values for a given traffic stream when queried by a traffic manager (typically a QoS Management Entity).
- Service type: Identified as urn:schemas-upnp-org:service:QosPolicyHolder:2.
- Discovery: Each QosPolicyHolder service must be SSDP-discoverable within the home network.
- Policy computation: Traffic policy values are determined by applying the home network’s configured policy rules to the requested traffic descriptor. The configuration and management of those policy rules are out of scope for this document.
- Scope limits: The standard does not define end-to-end setup or revocation procedures for traffic streams; it focuses on providing policy values only.
- Modeling elements included: state variables, eventing and moderation, actions (e.g., GetTrafficPolicy), XML service description and conformance test considerations.
- Implementation dependencies: Conformance requires adherence to referenced UPnP and other normative specifications included in the document.
Practical applications
- Implementing a QoS Policy Holder on routers, home gateways, media devices, or dedicated QoS appliances to centralize policy decisions for local traffic flows.
- Enabling home-network QoS management where a QoS Manager queries devices for policy parameters (bandwidth, priority, markings) to guide local traffic handling.
- Integrating with UPnP-based multimedia, VoIP, or streaming solutions where adaptive policy information is required to prioritize latency-sensitive streams.
Who would use this standard
- Firmware and device developers for home routers, gateways, set-top boxes, media renderers and servers.
- System integrators building UPnP-compliant QoS management solutions for residential and small business networks.
- Test and certification labs validating QoS Policy Holder implementations against UPnP/ISO/IEC profiles.
