This service definition is compliant with the UPnP Device Architecture version 1.0. This service-type encapsulates the management of an out-of-band remoting protocol connection to a device capable of user interaction. This service is required for all Remote UI clients. It is specified in: urn:schemas-upnp-org:device:RemoteUIClientDevice
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 29341-12-10:2015 specifies the Remote User Interface (Remote UI) Client Service as part of the UPnP Device Architecture. Aligned with UPnP Device Architecture version 1.0, this standard defines a service-type for managing an out-of-band remoting protocol connection between a Remote UI client and a device that supports user interaction. The service is mandatory for all Remote UI clients and is published under the device type urn:schemas-upnp-org:device:RemoteUIClientDevice and service type urn:schemas-upnp-org:service:RemoteUIClient:1.
Key Topics
- Service modeling: formal service-type, state variables and their semantics (for example DeviceProfile, CurrentConnections, CompatibleUIsUpdateIDEvent).
- State variables & eventing: variables for UI compatibility, connection tracking and moderated eventing to support notifications to control points.
- Actions: standardized control actions to manage remote UI sessions, including:
- Connect, Disconnect
- GetCurrentConnections, GetDeviceProfile
- GetUIListing, AddUIListing, RemoveUIListing
- DisplayMessage, ProcessInput
- Error handling: common error codes and action relationships to ensure interoperable behavior.
- Data models & schemas: XSD schemas for DeviceProfile and compatible UI listings, and an XML service description for UPnP stack integration.
- Normative references: links to related UPnP parts and URI/URL syntax standards (e.g., RFC 1738, RFC 3986, ISO/IEC 29341-4-12).
Applications
This standard is used to enable remote control and interaction scenarios where a client device remotes a user interface hosted by another device. Practical use cases include:
- Remote control and screen-mirroring for consumer electronics (media players, set-top boxes, smart TVs).
- Smart home and IoT devices enabling remote UI access from mobile apps or dedicated controllers.
- Enterprise and accessibility solutions where UI rendering and input are remoted to assistive devices.
- Device interoperability testing and certification, ensuring consistent behavior across UPnP Remote UI implementations.
Who uses it:
- Device manufacturers implementing UPnP Remote UI clients or servers.
- Firmware and application developers building remoting clients or integration layers.
- System integrators and QA teams validating UPnP Device Architecture conformance.
Related Standards

- UPnP Device Architecture parts in the ISO/IEC 29341 series
- IETF RFC 1738 and RFC 3986 (URI/URL syntax)
This standard provides the service template, state variable definitions, action set, XSD schemas and XML service description required for interoperable Remote UI client implementations under UPnP.
