ISO/IEC 29341-15-10:2011(E) Describes the Content Synchronization service which enables two or more ContentDirectory services [CDS] to synchronize content with each other. This service also enables a UPnP control point to synchronize content with a ContentDirectory service. We refer this service as "CSS" or "ContentSync service" from hereon. If a CDS wants to support synchronization of objects and its resources with other CDSs, the implementation MUST enable this ContentSync service (CSS). CSS keeps change log as part of CDS object property that describe which CDS objects are added or modified or deleted since it has synchronized last. Since synchronization enables interaction between ContentSync services, each service has a Control Point (CP) functionality that invokes actions to other ContentSync service to achieve synchronization of contents with each other. This service definition is compliant with the UPnP Device Architecture version 1.0.
Abstract
Overview - ISO/IEC 29341-15-10:2011 (Content Synchronization Service)
ISO/IEC 29341-15-10:2011 defines the Content Synchronization (ContentSync or CSS) service as part of the UPnP Device Architecture. The standard describes how two or more UPnP ContentDirectory Services (CDS)-or a control point and a CDS-synchronize content objects and resources. It is compliant with UPnP Device Architecture v1.0 and is intended for implementations that need reliable, interoperable content replication and update propagation across networked media servers.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Mandatory service enablement: A CDS that supports object/resource synchronization must implement the ContentSync service.
- Change log management: CSS maintains a change log as a CDS object property indicating items added, modified, or deleted since the last synchronization.
- Control Point functionality: Each ContentSync service exposes Control Point (CP) actions to invoke synchronization operations on remote CSS-enabled CDS instances.
- Service modeling and state variables: The standard defines state variables (e.g., SyncChange, SyncStatusUpdate) and eventing/moderation rules for efficient updates.
- Core actions and APIs: Standardized actions include AddSyncData, ModifySyncData, DeleteSyncData, ExchangeSyncData, AddSyncPair, StartSync, AbortSync, GetChangeLog, ResetChangeLog, GetSyncStatus, and others - enabling granular control of sync relationships and operations.
- Synchronization data structures & policies: Definitions cover sync objects, sync pairs, synchronization relationship data structures, policy/behavior, minimally complete sync data, and garbage collection.
- XML service description & testing: XML service descriptors and test provisions ensure interoperability between vendors.
- Error handling: Common error codes and action-specific error responses are defined to support robust implementations.
Practical applications and who uses it
- Media server vendors implementing UPnP ContentDirectory on NAS devices, smart TVs, set-top boxes, or home media servers to keep libraries consistent across devices.
- Home automation and multimedia application developers who need synchronized playlists, photo libraries, or media metadata across multiple servers or clients.
- Enterprise or SMB environments where distributed media repositories must mirror or replicate content catalogues reliably.
- System integrators and firmware engineers implementing UPnP device stacks to ensure cross-vendor synchronization interoperability.
