Overview
ISO/IEC 29341-28-2:2017 specifies the UPnP ScreenDevice (version 1), a device type defined for multiscreen device control within the UPnP Device Architecture 1.0 framework. The ScreenDevice is intended to be controlled by and to interact with one or more Screen Control Point(s) and to provide interactive services to other display devices in a multiscreen environment.
The standard defines the device type identifier (urn:schemas-upnp-org:device:ScreenDevice:1), the XML device description structure and a device model that outlines required embedded devices and services. A ScreenDevice may be implemented as a Root device or embedded within another UPnP device and may itself contain additional embedded devices.
Keywords: UPnP, ScreenDevice, Multi-Screen, Screen Control Point, XML device description, device model, multiscreen control.
Key Topics
Applications
The ScreenDevice specification has practical value for implementers and integrators building multiscreen systems, including:
- Smart TVs and set-top boxes that need to register as controllable screens within a home network.
- Multiscreen content distribution where synchronized control across displays is required.
- Interactive display ecosystems in consumer, commercial or kiosk environments where external control points manage presentation, layout or application lifecycle on screens.
- Integration with application management services using UPnP ApplicationManagement and Multi-Screen Architecture patterns.
Benefits include standardized discovery and control, interoperability across compliant UPnP devices, and a consistent XML device description model that supports automated integration.
