This service definition is compliant with the UPnP Device Architecture version 1.0 and Version 1.01 of the UPnP Standard Service Template. This service-type enables the following functions: · basic power switching for embedding devices. This service template does not address: · It is assumed that implementations of this service will not disable themselves as a side effect of driving their output load to a disabled state.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 29341-7-11:2015 - “Information technology - UPnP Device Architecture - Part 7-11: Lighting Device Control Protocol - Switch Power Service” defines a UPnP service template for basic power switching in lighting and embedded devices. The standard is compliant with the UPnP Device Architecture v1.0 and the UPnP Standard Service Template v1.01 and specifies the service-type urn:schemas-upnp-org:service:SwitchPower:1. It includes state variables, actions, eventing/moderation rules, an XML service description and conformance test guidance.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Service model
- Defines two required state variables: Target (requested power state) and Status (actual output state). Simple implementations may set Status = Target.
- Allows vendor-specific non-standard state variables and actions as extensions.
- Actions
- SetTarget - request power-off (0) or power-on (1).
- GetTarget - retrieve the current Target (primarily for testing/debugging).
- GetStatus - retrieve the actual Status of the output.
- Standardized error codes and handling (e.g., Invalid Action, Invalid Args, Action Failed; 600–699 reserved for UPnP Forum common errors).
- Eventing and moderation
- Specifies which variables are evented (Status) and how moderation/decimation of events is handled to avoid excessive notifications.
- XML service description
- Provides the formal UPnP service description used in device discovery and control.
- Conformance and testing
- Includes a test section for verifying correct behavior of the Switch Power Service.
- Design assumption
- Implementations are assumed not to disable themselves as a side effect of driving their output load to a disabled state.
Applications and who uses it
- Device manufacturers building smart lighting products (binary on/off fixtures, power relays, embedded lighting modules).
- IoT and home automation developers integrating UPnP-based control into gateways, hubs, or controllers.
- System integrators and solution providers implementing networked lighting control, building automation or retrofit modules.
- Test labs and QA engineers verifying UPnP service conformance and interoperability.
- Firmware engineers for embedded devices that need a lightweight, standardized power switching interface over IP.
Related standards

This standard is essential for interoperable, networked on/off control of lighting devices and embedded power switches in UPnP ecosystems.
