Overview
ISO/IEC 30163:2021 defines system requirements for an integrated Internet of Things (IoT) and Sensor Network (SN) platform for chattel asset monitoring supporting financial services. The standard specifies the functional architecture, system and functional requirements across the whole chattel asset lifecycle (storage, in/out of warehouse, transit, mortgage), performance requirements for each functional component, and interface definitions for system integration. It is intended for the design and development of IoT/SN solutions that link physical collateral assets with financial systems.
Key topics
- System infrastructure and architecture
- Six-domain model aligned with the IoT Reference Architecture (ISO/IEC 30141): Physical Entity Domain (PED), Sensing & Controlling Domain (SCD), Application & Service Domain (ASD), Operation & Management Domain (OMD), Access & Communication Domain (ACD), and User Domain (UD).
- Functional requirements
- Requirements for entities in UD, OMD, ASD, ACD and SCD covering monitoring, verification, data management, alarms, and business services.
- Sensing capabilities
- SCD includes weight, position, contour, video, movement and unauthorized-access detection to verify chattel asset condition and location.
- Performance specifications
- Performance requirements and testable performance specifications for each functional component and for scenarios such as in-warehouse and in-transit monitoring.
- Interface definitions
- Interface descriptions to enable data exchange between platform domains and external financial systems, ensuring interoperability and reliable asset evidence.
- Security, integrity and auditability
- While not prescribing a single security mechanism, the standard focuses on ensuring trustworthy monitoring and information sharing to reduce fraud and information asymmetry.
Applications
- Chattel mortgage workflows - provide verifiable, real-time evidence of collateral condition and location to support loan underwriting and monitoring.
- Warehouse management - automated in/out checks, stock monitoring, tamper detection and condition verification.
- In-transit asset tracking - continuous monitoring of mobile collateral (e.g., coils, raw materials) to prevent double-pledging or theft.
- Finance-IT integration - standardized interfaces for banks, insurers and asset financiers to consume validated asset data for credit decisions, risk assessment and audits.
Who should use this standard
- Financial institutions and lenders evaluating collateral-based lending
- IoT and sensor-network solution providers and system integrators
- Warehouse operators, logistics providers and asset monitoring services
- Regulators and auditors seeking standardized evidence for asset-backed finance
