This part of ISO/IEC 7816 specifies the power, signal structures, and the structure for the answer to reset between an integrated circuit(s) card with synchronous transmission and an interface device such as a terminal. The specifications in ISO/IEC 7816-3 apply where appropriate, unless otherwise stated here. It also covers signal rates, operating conditions, and communication with the integrated circuit(s) card. This part of ISO/IEC 7816 specifies two types of synchronous cards: type 1 and type 2.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 7816-10:1999 defines the electrical signals and Answer-to-Reset (ATR) behavior for synchronous integrated circuit(s) cards with contacts. It specifies how a synchronous smart card (two types: type 1 and type 2) presents power, clock and I/O signaling to an interface device (terminal), how the card is reset, and how the initial 32‑bit header (ATR header) is formatted and timed so the terminal can determine compatibility.
Key Topics
- Card types and contact assignments
- Defines two synchronous card types (type 1 and type 2).
- Adds the FCB contact function for type 2 (used with RST to indicate command type).
- Electrical characteristics
- Uses class A operating voltages and currents as in ISO/IEC 7816‑3.
- FCB contact electrical characteristics match RST contact.
- Reset sequences and timing
- Detailed reset procedures for type 1 and type 2 synchronous cards, including required signal states (VCC, VPP, CLK, RST, FCB, I/O) and deactivation steps.
- Timing constraints: e.g., reset high maintained at least 50 μs for type 1; clock pulse widths and propagation delays specified.
- Answer-to-Reset (ATR) header
- The ATR header is a fixed 32-bit field transmitted LSB first on I/O synchronized to CLK.
- Header comprises fields H1–H4; H1 and H2 are mandatory and indicate protocol and parameters (H1 codes protocol type; H2 codes protocol parameters when applicable).
- Sampling rules and clock/bit-rate relationship (bit rate linear with clock frequency). Frequency limits: type 1
