Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 8073:1997 - Information technology - Open Systems Interconnection - Protocol for providing the connection-mode transport service - specifies the OSI Transport Protocol used to provide a connection-mode transport service between systems. Published as an identical text to ITU‑T Recommendation X.224, this fourth edition defines the structure, procedures and classes for Transport Protocol Data Units (TPDUs), plus conformance and test material (PICS, state tables, checksums).
Key topics and requirements
ISO/IEC 8073 documents the protocol elements needed for reliable, connection-mode transport in the OSI model. Major topics include:
- Transport layer services and the service assumed from the network layer (CONS and CLNS references are present).
- TPDU structure and encoding: definitions for CR, CC, DR, DC, DT, ED, AK, EA, RJ, ER and other TPDUs.
- Protocol classes 0–4: detailed specifications and functional differences across classes (simple, error recovery, multiplexing, expedited data, class 4 specifics).
- Procedures and primitives: segmenting/reassembly, concatenation/separation, connection establishment/refusal, normal and error release, expedited transfer, retransmission, resequencing, flow control and inactivity control.
- Error handling and recovery: retransmission on timeout, protocol error treatment, reassignment and frozen references.
- Operational artifacts: state tables (Annex A, E), Network Connection Management Subprotocol (NCMS, Annex B), PICS proforma (Annex C), and checksum algorithms (Annex D).
- Conformance: requirements and statements for implementers and testers.
Practical applications and target users
ISO/IEC 8073 is relevant for:
- Protocol implementers and firmware developers building OSI-compatible transport stacks or gateways.
- Network equipment vendors ensuring interoperability over connection-mode network services (CONS) and connectionless-mode network services (CLNS).
- Test and interoperability labs using PICS and state tables for conformance testing.
- Standards architects and network engineers designing layered communication systems, legacy OSI environments, or integrating OSI with TCP/IP domains.
- Educators and researchers studying protocol design, transport-layer mechanisms and formal conformance procedures.
Related standards
- ITU‑T Recommendation X.224 (identical text)
- Other OSI standards for network layer and upper-layer protocols (referenced within ISO/IEC 8073)
ISO/IEC 8073 is essential when precise, standardized behavior at the OSI transport layer is required-especially for implementations that demand interoperable connection-mode transport, formal conformance testing, and comprehensive state-machine definitions.
