Defines in an abstract way the externally visible service provided by the OSI presentation layer in terms of the primitive actions and events at the user/service boundary, the parameter data associated with each primitive action and event, the relationship between, and the valid sequences of, those actions and events. The service defined is the connection-oriented service which is provided by the OSI connection-oriented presentation protocol and the connectionless service which is provided by the OSI connectionless presentation protocol, each in conjunction with the OSI session service.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 8822:1994 - "Information technology - Open Systems Interconnection - Presentation service definition" - specifies, in an abstract way, the externally visible presentation-layer service in the OSI Reference Model. The standard describes the primitive actions and events at the user/service boundary, the parameters associated with each primitive, and the valid relationships and sequences between them. It covers both the connection-oriented and connectionless presentation services as used with the OSI session service. (The identical text is published as ITU‑T Recommendation X.216.)
Key topics and technical requirements
- Service model: Abstract definition of the presentation service exposed to application entities (externally visible primitives, events and parameters).
- Connection modes: Support for both connection-oriented and connectionless presentation services (each used in conjunction with the session service).
- Primitive operations: Detailed primitives and services for presentation-layer interactions, e.g. P-CONNECT, P-DATA, P-TYPED-DATA, P-UNIT-DATA, P-EXPEDITED-DATA, P-RESYNCHRONIZE, P-RELEASE, and abort/exception services.
- Facilities: Functional facilities such as connection establishment/termination, context management (presentation contexts), information transfer, dialogue control, and connectionless transfer.
- Presentation context & syntax negotiation: Defines negotiation and management of abstract syntaxes and transfer syntaxes (presentation contexts) to preserve semantics across communicating application entities.
- Control and token management: Primitives supporting dialog control, token passing and activity control (e.g., P-ACTIVITY-START/END, token give/please).
- Quality of Service (QOS): Addresses presentation-layer QOS considerations and notes the ongoing work to align QOS across OSI layers.
- Annexes: Includes guidance on X.410 mode restrictions and registration of abstract syntaxes; contains editorial corrections from ITU‑T.
Practical applications and who uses it
- Protocol and stack implementers: Designers of OSI-compliant presentation protocols and middleware that must interwork with session and application layers.
- Network architects and vendors: Companies building interoperable systems where semantic preservation (data representation, syntax negotiation) across heterogeneous systems is required.
- Standards developers and integrators: Bodies registering abstract syntaxes or aligning presentation services with higher-layer application protocols.
- Educators and researchers: Those teaching OSI layering, protocol design and interoperability concepts.
ISO/IEC 8822 is essential for anyone implementing or integrating systems that rely on the OSI presentation layer to ensure correct syntax negotiation, data representation, and reliable presentation primitives handling.
