The Fibre Distributed Data Interface (FDDI), ISO/IEC 9314, is intended for use in a high-performance general purpose multi-node network and is designed for efficient operation with a peak data rate of 100 Mbit/s. It uses a Token Ring architecture with optical fibre as the transmission medium. FDDI provides for hundreds of nodes operating over an extent of tens of kilometres. Station Management (SMT) specifies the local portion of the system management application process for FDDI, including the control required for proper operation of a node in an FDDI ring. SMT provides services such as connection management, station insertion and removal, station initialization, configuration management, fault isolation and recovery, communications protocol for external authority, scheduling policies, and collection of statistics.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 9314-6:1998 - "Information technology - Fibre distributed data interface (FDDI) - Part 6: Station Management (SMT)" specifies the local system-management functions required for nodes in an FDDI network. FDDI is a high‑performance, optical‑fibre, Token Ring architecture designed to operate at a peak data rate of 100 Mbit/s, supporting hundreds of nodes across extents of tens of kilometres. This part (SMT) defines how a station controls its participation in the ring, communicates management information, and interacts with lower layers (MAC, PHY, PMD).
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard details the services, facilities and protocols required for robust station management, including:
- SMT services to MAC, PHY and PMD layers: primitives for initialization, control, status, token handling and unit data exchange.
- Management services and MIB: a Management Information Base structure, attribute/action templates and ASN.1 definitions for FDDI management data.
- Frame formats and protocols: SMT frame structures (NIF, SIF, ECF, PMF, SRF, RDF, optional ESF/RAF), encoding rules, multibyte ordering and addressing.
- Frame-based protocols: neighbour notification, status reporting, parameter management, echo, station polling and synchronous bandwidth allocation protocols.
- Connection and ring management: connection management architecture (ECM, PCM, CFM), link tests (LCT/LEM), path tests, configuration control elements, and ring management state machines.
- Operational conventions: state machines, default/initial values, timers, flags, signals and fault isolation/recovery behaviors.
The document prescribes precise management primitives, state diagrams and MIB definitions to ensure interoperable station behavior and predictable fault handling.
Practical applications
ISO/IEC 9314-6:1998 is applied where FDDI networks are deployed or emulated, particularly for:
- Network equipment manufacturers implementing FDDI station firmware or concentrator logic.
- Systems integrators and network architects designing high‑performance optical ring networks and ensuring predictable station behavior.
- Network operations and management teams that collect statistics, perform configuration management, fault isolation, and external authority communications using FDDI management interfaces.
- Test and certification labs validating conformance of station management implementations against FDDI SMT behaviors.
