ISO/IEC 9834-9:2008 specifies the procedures for operating the Registration Authority for object identifiers under the arc {joint-iso-itu-t(2) tag-based(27)}, that supports tag-based applications and services.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 9834-9:2008 specifies the procedures for the Registration Authority (RA) that allocates object identifier (OID) arcs under the OID arc {joint-iso-itu-t(2) tag-based(27)}. The standard supports applications and services that use tag-based identification, where identifiers are stored in memory-limited tags (for example RFID or other tag media). The RA performs both administrative and technical roles; the administrative role is assigned to NIDA and the technical role to the relevant Rapporteur.
Key Topics
- Scope and purpose: Procedures for operating the RA to assign short OIDs for tag-based identification schemes.
- Responsibilities of the RA: Maintain a public Register of assigned primary integer values and secondary identifiers; receive, evaluate and record applications.
- Criteria for acceptance: Allocations are accepted when the scheme supports tag-based applications or services, is specified in a publicly available standard from a recognized body (ISO, IEC, ITU-T or an internationally recognized consortium), and meets open-environment interchange requirements.
- Application content: Applications must include organization name, contact details, applicant identification, a reference to an openly accessible specification, and optionally desired secondary identifiers. The recommended interface is the OID repository at http://www.oid-info.com/get/2.27.
- Processing and timelines: Technical evaluation is expected within 8 weeks. Applicants must specify a time-scale for deployment (not to exceed 12 months) or the application can be rejected or voided. A voided primary integer value is not to be reused for five years.
- Outcomes and notices: The RA issues registration announcements for accepted arcs and notices of rejection with reasons and application details for rejected requests.
Applications
This part of ISO/IEC 9834 is directly applicable to implementers and standardization bodies that need compact OIDs for memory-constrained tags used in:
- RFID and NFC tag identification schemes
- Embedded tag identifiers for supply chain, asset tracking and inventory
- Lightweight identification systems where ASN.1 OID encoding must be minimized
Practical value includes simplified cross-vendor interoperability, compact identifier encodings for constrained memory, and a formal, recognized registration process to avoid collisions.

For administrative contact and RA operations see the standard (NIDA contact and OID repository details are provided in the document). For technical queries refer to the relevant Rapporteur named in the standard.
