ISO/IEC/IEEE 18882:2017 is based on the protocol defined in IEEE Std 1888?1, IEEE Standard for Ubiquitous Green Community Control Network Protocol, this standard extends component and data type definitions, message formats, and communication procedures for heterogeneous network convergence and scalability. This standard also describes heterogeneous networks interconnection issues and requirements. Also, this standard specifies system architecture and solutions to improve heterogeneous networks convergence and scalability while offering system robustness and supplying better performance in system operation and management.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC/IEEE 18882:2017 - titled "Information technology - Telecommunications and information exchange between systems - Ubiquitous green community control network: Heterogeneous networks convergence and scalability" - extends the IEEE 1888 family to address interconnection, convergence and scalability of heterogeneous access networks. Based on IEEE Std 1888.1, this standard expands component and data type definitions, message formats and communication procedures to improve interoperability, robustness and operational performance of IEEE 1888 systems in mixed-network environments.
Key topics and technical requirements
- System architecture extensions: Introduces two new IEEE 1888 components - the Reconfigurable Resolution Server (RRS) and the Intelligent Application Resolver (IAR) - to mediate heterogeneous network interactions and improve service resolution.
- Data type and field-bus management: Generalizes primitive data type expressions and formalizes explicit field‑bus data type handling to enable consistent representation of sensor/actuator data across different bus technologies.
- Message formats & communication procedures: Defines extended message structures and procedures required for efficient cross-network communications while maintaining compatibility with IEEE 1888 protocol families.
- Heterogeneous networks convergence: Specifies requirements and design considerations for interconnecting diverse protocols and access technologies to achieve seamless convergence.
- Scalability and manageability: Details architectural and operational solutions to scale IEEE 1888 systems, increase flexibility and ease system operation and management.
- Interconnection issues and requirements: Describes practical constraints, interface expectations and robustness considerations when bridging networks with differing semantics, timing and data models.
Practical applications
ISO/IEC/IEEE 18882:2017 targets deployments where multiple access networks and field buses must interoperate reliably and scale, such as:
- Smart cities and ubiquitous green community control systems (energy optimization, public infrastructure control)
- Building automation and integrated facility management across BACnet, LonWorks, ZigBee, ECHONET and other field-bus systems
- Distributed energy resources and smart-grid edge integration requiring heterogeneous device access
- Large-scale IoT platforms, gateways and middleware that must normalize data types and message flows for analytics and control
Who should use this standard
- Network and system architects designing converged IoT, smart-city or smart-building networks
- IoT gateway and middleware vendors needing interoperable data models and message formats
- Facilities managers, utilities and integrators implementing cross-vendor control systems
- Developers and implementers aiming to scale IEEE 1888-based deployments and improve manageability
