ISO/IEC/IEEE 21451-7:2011 defines data formats to facilitate communications between radio frequency identification (RFID) systems and smart RFID tags with integral transducers (sensors and actuators). It defines new Transducer Electronic Data Sheet (TEDS) formats based on the ISO/IEC/IEEE 21451 series of standards. It also defines a command structure and specifies the communication methods with which the command structure is designed to be compatible.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC/IEEE 21451-7:2011 specifies data formats and communication protocols that enable interoperable linkage between radio frequency identification (RFID) systems and smart RFID tags that integrate transducers (sensors and actuators). The standard defines new Transducer Electronic Data Sheet (TEDS) formats aligned with the ISO/IEC/IEEE 21451 family, a command structure for sensor interaction, and communication methods compatible with RFID and real-time location systems (RTLS). It also addresses security features such as authentication and encryption for sensor data and control.
Key topics and technical requirements
- TEDS formats: Defines Type and characteristic records for sensors/actuators so RFID tags can convey metadata (sensor type, units, scale factors, resolution, data uncertainty, memory rollover, etc.).
- Command structure: Standardized commands for reading identifiers, TEDS, sample/configuration records, event records, alarms, mission control (begin/end), and secure session management.
- RFID/RTLS air interface applicability: Describes how transducer data and commands map to RFID air interfaces and RTLS deployments.
- Security and authentication: Specifies support fields and function codes for air-interface security, sensor authentication, encryption capability maps, random number and key sizing fields, and recommendations for secure session handling.
- Event and data logging: Defines event administration records, event records, sample counts, timestamping (UTC), alarm thresholds, and memory-management behavior (rollover).
- Addressing and integration: Rules for addressing/sub-addressing multiple sensors per tag and guidance for integrating with other 21451 devices.
- Physical interface guidance (informative): Annexes cover common physical interfaces between transducer and tag electronics, such as serial bus, 1‑Wire, SPI and I²C.
Applications and who uses this standard
ISO/IEC/IEEE 21451-7 is intended for:
- RFID system designers and manufacturers implementing sensor-capable tags.
- Sensor and actuator manufacturers creating TEDS-aware transducers for RFID integration.
- IoT and Industry 4.0 integrators who need interoperable, plug-and-play sensor data over RFID/RTLS.
- Supply chain, asset tracking, environmental monitoring, and condition-based maintenance deployments that combine identification with sensing.
- Security engineers implementing authentication and encryption for sensor data over RFID links.
Practical benefits include standardized metadata for automated sensor discovery, consistent command handling across vendors, secure sensor read/write operations, and simplified integration of sensing into RFID-enabled IoT ecosystems.
