This document defines security key management extensions to address session key generation (both 128-bit and 256-bit key lengths), the creation and/or transport of broadcast/multicast keys, and security algorithm agility. This document maintains backwards compatibility with IEEE Std 802.15.9-2016.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC/IEEE 8802-15-9:2024 - Transport of Key Management Protocol (KMP) Datagrams - specifies a transport framework for key management datagrams in local and metropolitan area networks. The standard defines an information-element (IE) based message exchange, a multiplexed data service for transmitting large KMP packets, and guidance for using existing KMPs with IEEE 802.15.4. It updates and maintains backward compatibility with IEEE Std 802.15.9‑2016 and addresses modern security needs such as session key generation (128‑ and 256‑bit), broadcast/multicast key handling, and security algorithm agility.
Key Topics and Requirements
- KMP datagram transport: Message-exchange framework using information elements to carry key management protocol payloads.
- Session key support: Specifications cover session key generation for both 128‑bit and 256‑bit key lengths.
- Broadcast/multicast key handling: Creation and/or transport mechanisms for distributing group keys securely.
- Security algorithm agility: Support for multiple cryptographic algorithms and the ability to migrate or select algorithms.
- Multiplexed data service: Generic service layer enabling:
- Fragmentation of large KMP packets for delivery over smaller MAC frames.
- Multiplexing to deliver packets to the correct upper-layer processing service.
- Protocol discrimination using EtherType values.
- Compatibility: Maintains backwards compatibility with IEEE Std 802.15.9‑2016; does not define a new KMP but provides transport and guidelines for existing KMPs.
- Keywords integrated: EtherType, fragmentation, information element (IE), key management protocol (KMP), IEEE 802.15.9, multiplexed data service.
Applications
- Secure key exchange for IoT devices, wireless sensor networks, low‑power personal area networks (LPWANs), and mesh networks using IEEE 802.15.4 PHY/MAC layers.
- Implementations requiring robust group key distribution for multicast/broadcast services (e.g., firmware update distribution, group messaging).
- Systems that need to support algorithm migration or multiple crypto suites for future-proof security.
Who should use this standard
- Firmware and device manufacturers developing secure 802.15.4-based products.
- Network architects and security engineers designing key management and secure provisioning workflows.
- Standards implementers, interoperability testers, and protocol stack vendors integrating KMP transport layers.
- System integrators working on constrained wireless deployments where fragmentation and multiplexing are necessary.
Related Standards
- IEEE Std 802.15.9‑2016 (preceding version)
- IEEE 802.15.4 (PHY/MAC commonly used with KMP transport)
- ISO/IEC/IEEE 8802 series (local and metropolitan area network family)
For implementers, ISO/IEC/IEEE 8802-15-9:2024 provides a practical, backward-compatible transport foundation enabling secure, flexible key management across constrained wireless networks.
