Overview
ISO/IEC/IEEE 8802-1AB:2017/Amd 1:2023 is an amendment to the ISO/IEC/IEEE 8802-1AB (IEEE 802.1AB) family that adds a YANG data model for station and media access control connectivity discovery. Published as Amendment 1 in 2023 (prepared as IEEE 802.1ABcu-2021), this document provides a standardized modeling layer to represent topology-discovery information and to support configuration and status reporting for bridges and MAC-level components in local and metropolitan area networks.
Keywords: ISO/IEC/IEEE 8802-1AB, YANG data model, connectivity discovery, topology discovery, IEEE 802.1AB, LLDP, network management
Key Topics
- YANG data model for connectivity discovery
- Introduces a machine-readable YANG model to represent connectivity-discovery state and configuration.
- Unified Modeling Language (UML) information model
- Supplies an information model that maps discovery concepts to the YANG representation (UML-based description as part of the amendment).
- Configuration and status reporting
- Enables standardized access to configuration parameters and operational state for bridges and bridge components that participate in topology/ connectivity discovery.
- Standards adoption and provenance
- Prepared within the IEEE 802.1 working group (802.1ABcu) and adopted through the ISO/IEC fast-track process; copyright and publishing handled by IEEE.
Applications
This amendment is practical for organizations and professionals who need standardized, interoperable models for network topology data and network management:
- Network equipment vendors
- Implement the YANG model in switches, bridges and NIC firmware to expose discovery state and configuration via NETCONF/RESTCONF.
- Network operators and service providers
- Use consistent data models to automate topology inventory, verification, and troubleshooting across multi-vendor environments.
- Network management and orchestration developers
- Integrate discovery data into NMS, SDN controllers, and orchestration tools to enable inventory reconciliation, fault isolation and automated provisioning.
- System integrators and test labs
- Validate interoperability of connectivity-discovery features and ensure consistent management-plane behavior.
Related Standards
- IEEE 802.1AB (station and media access control connectivity discovery / LLDP) - base standard for topology discovery.
- YANG modeling concepts (network management models) - the amendment supplies a YANG module to align 802.1AB discovery with model-driven management workflows.
This amendment improves interoperability by providing a vendor-neutral, standard YANG representation of station and MAC connectivity discovery, making topology and link-state data easier to consume, automate, and integrate into modern network management systems.
