ISO/IEC TR 12860:2009 is the first of a series of publications that explore IP-based enterprise communication involving Corporate telecommunication Networks (CNs) (also known as enterprise networks) and in particular Next Generation Corporate Networks (NGCN). The series particularly focuses on inter-domain communication, including communication between parts of the same enterprise, between enterprises and between enterprises and carriers. ISO/IEC TR 12860:2009 provides general information on the subject, defines some architectural concepts, identifies various communication scenarios, and provides a framework in support of other publications that provide greater detail on particular topics. The scope of ISO/IEC TR 12860:2009 is limited to communications with a real-time element, including voice, video, real-time text and instant messaging.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC TR 12860:2009 - "Information technology - Telecommunications and information exchange between systems - Next Generation Corporate Networks (NGCN) - General" is the first in a series of technical reports that frame IP-based enterprise communications for Corporate telecommunication Networks (CNs). The report focuses on session-level, real‑time communications (voice, video, real‑time text, instant messaging) and on inter-domain communication: within an enterprise, between enterprises, and between enterprises and carriers. It defines architectural concepts, communication scenarios, and a framework to support more detailed follow-ups (for example, identification and routing and mobility TRs).
Key topics and requirements
- Session architecture and signalling: Overview of session-level architecture using SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) and related media handling concepts (media path, session examples).
- Media and transport: Interaction with real‑time transport protocols (e.g., RTP, SDP) and gateway control references (H.248, H.323 where applicable).
- Domains and hosting: Definitions of domains, hosting models (dedicated NGCN, enterprise hosted on public infrastructure, multi-hosting, hybrid models) and implications for control and policy.
- Mobility and roaming: Scenarios for roaming enterprise users, guest users and access across visited domains.
- Inter-domain scenarios: Intra‑domain and inter‑domain session flows, enterprise-to-enterprise peering (direct/indirect), third‑party assistance and interfacing with public Next Generation Networks (NGN).
- Traffic separation and considerations: Private vs. public network traffic handling, break‑in/break‑out patterns, and business trunking models (subscription and peering).
- Standards alignment: Mapping to ongoing efforts (IETF, ETSI TISPAN, 3GPP, ITU‑T, SIP Forum) and identification of gaps and requirements for further standardization.
- Scope constraint: Limited to communications with a real‑time element.
Practical applications
- Designing and documenting enterprise VoIP/Unified Communications architectures consistent with international best practice.
- Planning NGCN deployment choices (dedicated vs. hosted) and interconnection with carrier NGN services.
- Defining roaming, peering and trunking strategies for enterprise‑grade SIP-based communications.
- Guiding product and interoperability testing for IP‑PBX vendors, service providers and system integrators.
Who should use this standard
- Network architects and telecom engineers designing enterprise communication systems.
- IT managers planning migration to SIP/NGCN environments.
- Service providers and carriers implementing enterprise interconnection, peering or hosting.
- Standards bodies, vendors and consultants working on SIP-based real‑time services.
Related standards
- ISO/IEC TR 12861 (Identification and routing), ISO/IEC TR 26927 (Mobility for Enterprise Communications), IETF RFCs (SIP, RTP, SDP), ETSI TISPAN, SIP Forum recommendations.
