Fibre channel is a high speed serial interface using either optical or electrical connections and provides a general data transport vehicle for Upper Level Protocols (ULPs). This Technical Report provides measurement methods and specifications to be used as part of a total signal performance compliance requirement set where the phase content of the signal is involved. A more generalized concept for jitter compliance testing is developed where the phase properties of the signals at signal levels other than the nominal receiver switching point are considered as well as the phase properties at the nominal receiver detection threshold.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC TR 14165-117:2007 - Information technology - Fibre Channel - Part 117: Methodologies for jitter and signal quality (MJSQ) is a Technical Report that defines measurement methods and signal-quality specification concepts for Fibre Channel physical interfaces. The report focuses on phase content (jitter) of high‑speed serial signals - both optical and electrical - and describes generalized methodologies for jitter compliance testing at signal levels including, but not limited to, the nominal receiver switching point.
Key topics and technical scope
The Technical Report covers practical and theoretical material used in signal‑performance verification, including:
- Jitter fundamentals and taxonomy
- Definitions of jitter types (random, deterministic, bounded/unbounded) and their contributions.
- Statistical behaviour and relationship between jitter distributions and bit‑error‑rate (BER).
- Measurement methodologies
- Time‑domain and frequency‑domain techniques for jitter output and tolerance measurements.
- Equivalent‑time oscilloscope (ETS) methods and enhanced ETS techniques for waveform and eye analysis.
- Frequency‑spectrum methods and tail‑fit analysis for separating jitter components.
- Jitter timing reference and hardware considerations
- Requirements for jitter timing references (e.g., Golden PLL performance for hardware implementations).
- Considerations for measuring phase at different signal levels and during data acquisition.
- Signal quality specifications
- Jitter eye‑mask methodology and 2‑D/eye‑mask approaches for processed and compensated signals.
- Methods to determine compliance, including calculation of Level‑1 deterministic jitter (DJ) and total jitter (TJ) and verification approaches such as BERT or calibrated signal sources.
- Processed signals and compensation
- How transmitter, interconnect and receiver equalization affect jitter and measurement methodology.
- Practical analysis
- Data forms, separation of jitter components, frequency response, and effects of distribution changes on BER.
Applications and users
This report is intended for professionals concerned with Fibre Channel physical‑layer signal integrity and compliance testing:
- Hardware design engineers working on transceivers, serializers/deserializers (SerDes), and optical/electrical interfaces.
- Test and validation engineers developing measurement procedures, test suites and conformance labs.
- Manufacturers and QA teams verifying device compliance to Fibre Channel interface requirements.
- System integrators troubleshooting link‑level performance and BER issues.
