The scope of this project is to define a general object-oriented information model that may be used to structure information and identify services used in point-of-care (POC) medical device communications. The scope is primarily focused on acute care medical devices and the communication of patient vital signs information.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEEE 11073-10201:2020 - "Health informatics - Device interoperability - Part 10201: Point-of-care medical device communication - Domain information model" defines an abstract, object-oriented domain information model (DIM) for point-of-care (POC) medical device communications. Focused primarily on acute care medical devices and the exchange of patient vital signs, the standard specifies how information is structured, which services and events objects support, and how the model can be applied across multiple implementation technologies. All data elements are defined using abstract syntax (ASN.1) so the model can be mapped to different transfer syntaxes, application services and implementation platforms.
Key technical topics and requirements
- Object-oriented Domain Information Model (DIM): Abstract specification of objects, attributes, events and services used in POC device communication.
- ASN.1 Abstract Syntax: All data structure elements are specified in ASN.1 to support technology-agnostic implementations.
- Core service areas: Medical data, alerts/alarms, system status, patient context, control/remote control, archival, communication services and extended services.
- Events and services: Definition of events and service behaviors supported by each object type (e.g., measurement reporting, alarm notification, control commands).
- Extensibility: Model supports extension to accommodate new device types and services while maintaining interoperability.
- Conformance model and statement template: Provides guidance for implementers to declare and verify conformance to the DIM.
- Interoperability focus: Designed for integration into broader device ecosystems such as medical information buses (MIBs) and hospital IT systems.
Practical applications
- Interoperability between bedside monitors, ventilators, infusion pumps and hospital information systems for real-time vital signs exchange.
- Standardized alarm and alert handling across device fleets to enable unified alarm management and clinical decision support.
- Device remote control and configuration in critical care and emergency settings.
- Archival and audit of device-sourced clinical data for EMR/HIS integration and regulatory evidence.
- Vendor-neutral MIB implementations and middleware that translate device information into hospital workflows.
Who should use this standard
- Medical device manufacturers implementing POC communication stacks.
- Systems integrators and middleware vendors building device connectivity platforms.
- Hospital IT architects and biomedical engineers responsible for device interoperability.
- EHR/HIS vendors and clinical application developers needing standardized device data ingestion.
- Test labs and conformance assessors validating compliance with ISO/IEEE 11073 DIM.
Related standards
- Part of the ISO/IEEE 11073 family for point-of-care medical device communication. Implementers should consult other parts of the 11073 series for transport, device specialization and conformance testing.
