ISO/IEEE 11073-10427:2018 establishes a normative defi nition of communication between devices containing a power source (agents) and managers (e.g., cell phones, personal computers, personal health appliances, set-top boxes) in a manner that enables plug-and-play interoperability. Using existing terminology, information profi les, applica-tion profi le standards, and transport standards as defi ned in other ISO/IEEE 11073 standards, this standard de-fi nes a common core of communication functionality of personal health devices (PHDs) containing a battery, including: 1) current device power status (e.g., on mains or on battery); 2) power charge status (e.g., percent of full charge); and 3) estimated time remaining (e.g., minutes).
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEEE 11073-10427:2018 - "Health informatics - Personal health device communication - Part 10427: Device specialization - Power status monitor of personal health devices" defines a normative communication profile for reporting power-related information from battery-powered personal health devices (PHDs) to managers (for example, smartphones, PCs, personal health appliances or set‑top boxes). The standard enables plug‑and‑play interoperability by specifying a common core of power-status functionality - including current power source, charge level, and estimated time remaining - while reusing terminology, information profiles and transport abstractions from the ISO/IEEE 11073 family.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Agent–Manager communication model: Defines how PHD agents (devices with a power source) present power status information to managers in a standardized way to support seamless integration.
- Power-state attributes: Normative definitions for key battery-related data elements such as:
- Current power status (e.g., mains vs battery)
- Power charge status (e.g., percent of full charge)
- Estimated time remaining (e.g., minutes remaining)
- Interoperability and plug‑and‑play: Uses existing ISO/IEEE 11073 terminology and information profiles so diverse personal health devices and software can exchange power data reliably.
- Profile reuse and transport independence: Relies on other ISO/IEEE 11073 application profile standards and transport standards (as applicable) rather than redefining communications layers, supporting multiple connectivity technologies.
- Normative specification: Establishes required semantics and data models to ensure consistent interpretation of power metrics across implementations.
Practical applications
- Integrating battery and power telemetry from wearables (fitness trackers, smart patches) into mobile health apps and remote monitoring platforms.
- Enabling home medical devices (portable monitors, infusion pumps, CPAP machines) to report charge state to gateways or clinical systems for maintenance and safety workflows.
- Providing system integrators and IoT platforms with standardized power telemetry for device lifecycle management, alerts (low battery), and predictive maintenance.
- Supporting regulators and test labs in defining conformance checks for power-status reporting in personal health device ecosystems.
Who should use this standard
- Device manufacturers and embedded firmware engineers building PHDs with batteries.
- Mobile and desktop application developers implementing manager functionality.
- Systems integrators, healthcare IT vendors and platform providers wanting interoperable device power telemetry.
- Test labs and compliance teams verifying adherence to ISO/IEEE 11073 device specialization requirements.
Related standards
- ISO/IEEE 11073 family of personal health device standards (information profiles, application profiles, and transport standards) - 11073-10427 is a device specialization aligned with these broader communication frameworks.
