ISO/TR 10064-6:2009 provides information on measuring methods and practices of unassembled bevel and hypoid gears and gear pairs. It includes methods and practices, which permit the manufacturer and purchaser to conduct measuring procedures which are accurate and repeatable to a degree compatible with the specified tolerance grade of ISO 17485. Tolerances are given in Clause 5 of ISO 17485:2006, for calculating the maximum values allowed by the specific tolerance grade. Required and optional measuring methods are provided in Clause 6 of ISO 17485:2006. ISO/TR 10064-6:2009 applies to bevel gear components as defined in ISO 17485. It does not apply to enclosed gear unit assemblies, including speed reducers or increasers, gear motors, shaft mounted reducers, high speed units, or other enclosed gear units which are manufactured for a given power, speed, ratio or application.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/TR 10064-6:2009 - "Code of inspection practice - Part 6: Bevel gear measurement methods" is an informative Technical Report from ISO/TC 60 that describes accepted measurement methods and practices for unassembled bevel and hypoid gears and gear pairs. The document focuses on inspection procedures that produce accurate, repeatable results compatible with the tolerance grades defined in ISO 17485:2006. It is intended for component-level inspection (not for enclosed gear units such as gear motors, reducers or complete assemblies).
Key topics and requirements
- Scope & intent: Guidance for measuring unassembled bevel/hypoid gears to verify conformity with ISO 17485 tolerance grades.
- Measurement subjects: Pitch deviations, runout, flank form, contact pattern checking, single‑flank and double‑flank composite tests, tooth thickness and datum surface tolerances.
- Measurement methods: Describes required and optional techniques (see Clause 6 of ISO 17485 for method selection) and recommends measurement at the tolerance diameter unless agreed otherwise.
- Manufacturing and purchasing considerations: Advice on documentation, agreed measurement protocols between manufacturer and purchaser, and when special measurements are needed.
- Process control: Emphasis on manufacturing planning, tool and machine maintenance, heat treatment control and statistical inspection methods to produce uniform gear quality with minimal final inspection.
- Acceptance and reporting: Notes on acceptance criteria, evaluation of measurement data, and need to specify loaded vs. unloaded tooth sides when applicable.
- Limitations: Does not apply to assembled/enclosed gear units and cautions users about extrapolating unassembled gear tolerances to assembled performance without application experience.
Practical applications - who uses it
- Gear manufacturers - to set shop inspection procedures and process control for bevel/hypoid gears.
- Quality & metrology engineers - to develop repeatable measurement protocols for runout, pitch, flank form and tooth thickness.
- Purchasers and spec writers - to define inspection requirements and acceptance criteria compatible with ISO 17485 accuracy grades.
- Design and maintenance engineers - to understand achievable component tolerances and requirements for matched gear sets and backlash considerations.
