Le but de ce rapport technique est de fournir une base commune pour la communication de l'enregistrement d'états de santé et de soins bucco-dentaires de façon telle : a) que la communication soit facilitée entre les professionnels, quel que soit le pays dans lequel ils exercent ; b) que la collecte des données pour l'odontologie légale soit facilitée ; c) que l'information soit plus rapidement disponible pour surveiller la santé bucco-dentaire de la population, planifier les besoins futurs en main-d'oeuvre professionnelle et les mesures préventives, etc. ; d) que soient fournies des lignes directrices pour la compatibilité des logiciels traitant de l'administration et de la pratique de l'art dentaire ; e) qu'il puisse être utile à la planification et à l'administration des systèmes et organisations d'assurance de santé ; f) qu'il convienne à l'évaluation et à la surveillance après commercialisation des produits dentaires ou des techniques de soins ; g) que soit fournie une base pour le classement et le marquage des produits, instruments, objets manufacturés et éléments du matériel dentaire.
