ISO/TS 18223:2015 describes an inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometric method for the determination of nickel content (mass fraction) between 20,0 % and 80,0 % in nickel alloys. Besides alloys where nickel is the main component regarding its content level, this method may also apply to alloys in which nickel has a content as high as several other elements (Fe, Cr, Co,?) and in which the "main element" cannot be specified.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/TS 18223:2015 specifies an inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometric (ICP-AES) method for the determination of nickel content (mass fraction) in nickel alloys. The procedure covers mass fractions between 20.0 % and 80.0 % and applies to alloys where nickel is the major component or where nickel’s level is comparable with other elements (Fe, Cr, Co, …). The method emphasizes matrix-matched calibration and bracketing to minimize spectral and matrix interferences for accurate nickel quantification.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope and range: Designed for nickel alloys with nickel content from 20.0 % to 80.0 %.
- Analytical principle: Dissolution of a test portion in a mixture of HF, HCl, HNO3 and H3PO4, fuming with HClO4, dilution, nebulisation and measurement by ICP-AES.
- Matrix-matched calibration & bracketing: Calibration solutions must closely match sample matrix; two bracketing standards are prepared approximately ±2 % around the expected nickel concentration to reduce matrix effects.
- Internal reference element: Use of an internal standard is recommended (scandium at 363.07 nm suggested) to correct for instrumental drift and nebulisation effects where instrument capability allows.
- Performance criteria for the spectrometer: Requirements include spectral resolution (bandwidth
