This document gives guidance on substrate selection, storage and handling as well as essential characteristics of tensile bond strength test methods for quality testing of the adhesive bond between restorative dental materials and tooth structure, i.e. enamel and dentine. Some specific test methods for tensile bond strength measurements are given in Annex A. This document does not include requirements for components of adhesive materials and their performance.

Store prepared teeth in Grade 3 distilled water (ISO 3696) or 1.0% chloramine‑T solution for a maximum of one week, then in Grade 3 water at ~4 °C; replace storage medium at least every two months.
Avoid other chemical agents that can be absorbed and alter behaviour.

Surface preparation and bonding area

Produce a reproducible flat, wet surface (dentine is sensitive to dehydration).
Final planing with silicon carbide abrasive to P600 grit (ISO 6344‑3).

Test method essentials

Control of bonding area and surface roughness is essential.
Two critical test-design variables: alignment of tensile forces and limitation of bonding area.
Details on apparatus, connecting devices, tensile loading, durability storage procedures, data recording and analysis are specified.
