This document specifies methods for the determination of thermal stability and thermal fragmentation of coal. It is applicable to brown coal and lignites, anthracites and bituminous coal with a caking index of zero (determined by ISO 15585).
Abstract
Overview
ISO/TS 4667:2022 specifies laboratory methods for determining the thermal stability (TS) and thermal fragmentation (TF) of coal. Applicable to brown coal and lignites, anthracites, and bituminous coal with a caking index of zero (per ISO 15585), the technical specification describes sample preparation, furnace conditions, sieving, calculation of indices and reporting. The methods are intended to support coal gasification and high‑temperature combustion decisions by quantifying how coal behaves under pyrolysis-like conditions.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and applicability: Brown coal, lignite, anthracite, and non‑caking bituminous coal (caking index = 0).
- Test principle: Heat 6–13 mm coal samples out of contact with air at (850 ± 15) °C for 30 min, cool, sieve residues and calculate TS and TF.
- Thermal stability (TS): Reported as the percentage mass retained in the +6 mm fraction vs. total residue; secondary indices for 3–6 mm and
