Overview
ISO/TS 6892-5:2025 - Metallic materials - Tensile testing - Part 5: Specification for testing miniaturised test pieces - provides guidance for performing tensile tests when insufficient material exists to prepare full-size specimens per ISO 6892-1. It covers conventionally manufactured metallic materials and describes adapted specimen designs, preparation, gripping, measurement and verification methods so tensile test results from miniaturised test pieces are reproducible and, where possible, comparable to standard tests.

- Preparation methods: Turning, milling, water-jet cutting or grinding may be used. Minimising work hardening and heating during manufacture is emphasised. Modified dimensional tolerances are specified (e.g., flat thickness/b tolerances and round diameter tolerances).
- Measurement of cross-sectional area: Instruments must be SI-traceable; relevant dimensions measured with accuracy better than 0.5%.
- Test equipment accuracy:
- Force system: conform to ISO 7500-1, class 1 (or better) in the relevant range.
- Extensometer: conform to ISO 9513, class 0.5 (or better) due to small gauge lengths and extensions.
- Test procedure: Use ISO 6892-1, Method A strain control (A1 closed-loop or A2 open-loop). Other parameters (pre-load, sampling) must be adapted for miniaturised specimens.
- Evaluation and comparability: Follow ISO 6892-1 evaluation rules. Be cautious with elongation-after-fracture and reduction-of-area measurements; geometry can change proportionality constants (k) so some results may not be directly comparable to full-size specimens.
- Verification: Perform side-by-side tests on homogeneous material using both full-size and miniaturised specimens. A suggested check: slope of the elastic portion of the stress–strain curve for five sequential verification tests should agree within ±20% of nominal full-size values.
