IEC 62626-1:2023 is available as IEC 62626-1:2023 RLV which contains the International Standard and its Redline version, showing all changes of the technical content compared to the previous edition.IEC 62626-1:2023 applies to enclosed switches-disconnectors with rated voltages up to 1 000 V AC for repair and maintenance work or cleaning work in load circuits. Devices within the scope of this document are switch-disconnectors in accordance with IEC 60947-3 with specific additional requirements. Enclosed switch-disconnectors in this document are suitable for isolation in accordance with the IEC 60947 series and are not equipped with means for remote control or automatic switching to avoid unexpected or accidental start. These devices are not used for operational switching, for example quick start and stop, jogging. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2014. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) update of this document based on IEC 60947-1:2020.
Abstract
Overview
EN IEC 62626-1:2025 (aligned with IEC 62626-1:2023 RLV) specifies additional requirements for enclosed switch-disconnectors used to provide isolation of electrical equipment during repair, cleaning and maintenance in specific applications. The standard applies to devices with rated voltages up to 1 000 V AC and covers enclosed, locally mounted switch-disconnectors that comply with IEC 60947-3. These devices are intended for isolation (often called “maintenance switches” or “safety switches”) and are not designed for remote control, automatic switching, or operational switching tasks such as quick start/stop or jogging. This edition (2025/2023) supersedes the 2014 version and updates requirements in line with IEC 60947-1:2020.
Key Topics and Requirements
The standard focuses on practical safety and performance characteristics. Key technical topics include:
- Scope and classification of enclosed switch-disconnectors for maintenance isolation.
- Constructional requirements: enclosure design, locking arrangements and protection against environmental influences.
- Marking and product information: front-marking, additional markings and required documentation for safe use.
- Mechanical and electrical performance: mechanical strength, degree of protection (IP/IK considerations), and switching capacity requirements consistent with IEC 60947 series.
- Operation/actuation requirements to prevent unintended operation during maintenance.
- Testing: type tests and performance verification procedures to demonstrate conformity.
- Emphasis that devices are not fitted for remote or automatic switching to avoid unexpected starts and that isolation may not prevent re-energization from non-electrical energy sources.
Applications and Who Uses It
EN IEC 62626-1 is essential for:
- Manufacturers of low-voltage enclosed switch-disconnectors and maintenance switches.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies validating compliance and safety.
- Electrical designers, specifiers and OEMs selecting isolation devices for motor circuits and equipment.
- Installation and maintenance teams, safety managers and procurement professionals**-to ensure correct selection and safe installation of isolation devices near the equipment being serviced.
Common applications: motor starter panels, machine tool isolation, local equipment isolation for cleaning or repair where reliable manual isolation is required.
