This document specifies quality levels for imperfections in arc-welded joints in aluminium and its alloys. It applies to material thicknesses above 0,5 mm. Three quality levels are given in order to permit application to a wide range of welded constructions. They are designated by symbols B, C and D. Quality level B corresponds to the highest requirement on the finished weld. The quality levels refer to production quality and not to the fitness for purpose (see 3.2) of the product manufactured. This document is applicable all types of weld (e.g. butt welds, fillet welds and branch connections), to, manual, mechanized and automatic welding, and to all welding positions. It is applicable to the following welding processes: - metal inert gas welding (MIG welding); gas metal arc welding /USA; - tungsten inert gas welding (TIG welding); gas tungsten arc welding /USA; - plasma arc welding. It is not applicable to metallurgical aspects (e.g. grain size, hardness).
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 10042:2018 (ISO 10042:2018) defines acceptance quality levels for imperfections in arc‑welded joints made from aluminium and its alloys. Applicable to material thicknesses > 0.5 mm, the document provides standardized dimensional limits and acceptance criteria for common imperfections found in production welding. It is intended as a reference for drafting application codes and for specifying production quality (not fitness‑for‑purpose) across a wide range of welded constructions.
Key topics
- Quality levels B, C and D: three graded acceptance levels (B = most stringent) to suit different fabrication and inspection needs.
- Types of welds covered: butt welds, fillet welds, branch connections and other joint forms.
- Welding processes: metal inert gas (MIG/GMAW), tungsten inert gas (TIG/GTAW) and plasma arc welding; applies to manual, mechanized and automatic welding in all positions.
- Imperfections addressed: dimensional limits for porosity, cracks, undercut, incomplete fusion/penetration and other typical arc‑welding defects (selection based on ISO 6520‑1 classifications).
- Inspection scope: directly applicable to visual testing of welds; correlation to other NDT methods (UT, RT, PT) requires additional reference (see ISO 17635).
- Normative references and annexes: references ISO 6520‑1 (classification of geometric imperfections) and includes informative annexes (e.g., percent porosity examples and user guidance).
- Limitations: does not cover metallurgical properties (grain size, hardness) or specify fitness‑for‑purpose - those are determined by the application standard, designer or purchaser.
Applications and users
EN ISO 10042:2018 is widely used for:
- Writing contractual or procurement acceptance criteria for aluminium fabrication.
- Establishing inspection and quality control plans in production welding.
- Guiding welding engineers, QA/QC inspectors and technicians on acceptable defect sizes.
- Assisting designers and specifiers in selecting appropriate production quality levels based on service conditions, loading and economics.
Typical users: welding engineers, fabrication shops, quality managers, inspection bodies and standards authors in industries working with aluminium structures and components.
Related standards
- ISO 6520‑1 - classification of geometric imperfections (normative reference).
- ISO 17635 - correlation between quality levels and non‑destructive testing methods.
- ISO 2553 - fillet weld throat definitions (referenced for dimensions).
- ISO 5817 - related defect descriptions used in welding standards.
EN ISO 10042:2018 helps organizations standardize acceptance of weld imperfections, streamline inspection criteria, and align production quality expectations across aluminium welding projects.
