Specifies a method for determining the resistance of the colour of textiles in all forms to the manufacturing operation designed to remove vegetable impurities by a treatment at high temperatures and with the cited chemical. The method is mainly applicable to wool and textiles containing wool, particularly those containing also acetate or polyamide fibres. The treated specimen is dried, baked, rinsed and neutralized. The changes in colour after rinsing, neutralizing and drying are assessed with the grey scale.
Abstract
Overview
SIST EN ISO 105-X01:1999 is an essential European and international standard that specifies a test method for assessing the colour fastness of textiles to carbonizing using aluminium chloride. This standard is primarily applicable to wool and wool-blend textiles, especially those containing acetate or polyamide fibres. The test simulates the manufacturing process that removes vegetable impurities by treating textiles at high temperatures with aluminium chloride, evaluating how textile colours withstand this harsh treatment.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Applicability The standard covers textiles in all forms, focusing mainly on wool and wool-containing blends. It ensures that colours remain stable and do not degrade significantly during the carbonizing process.
-
Test Methodology
- Specimens are impregnated with an aluminium chloride solution.
- They undergo a controlled drying phase at 60 °C, followed by baking at 115 °C.
- Post-treatment, specimens are rinsed in cold running water and neutralized using ammonium hydroxide solution.
- Colour changes are assessed using the ISO grey scale, specifically ISO 105-A02, to quantify resistance to colour alteration.
-
Test Specimens
- Fabric specimens: 40 mm × 100 mm dimensions.
- Yarn specimens: knitted into fabric of similar size or prepared as wicks.
- Loose fibres: compressed into sheets of defined size.
-
Control Testing A control dyed specimen using Cl Mordant Red 3 is evaluated concurrently to verify the effectiveness of the carbonizing test procedure.
Applications
-
Wool Textile Manufacturing Manufacturers use this standard to ensure that dyed wool fabrics withstand carbonizing steps without undesirable colour changes. This helps in producing high-quality wool textiles that retain their aesthetic appeal during processing.
-
Quality Control in Textile Industry Incorporation of this test enables systematic quality assessment of textile lots, particularly those involving blends of wool with acetate or polyamide fibres, ensuring consistent colour performance.
-
Research and Development Textile R&D labs utilize this standard to develop and optimize dyes and treatments that exhibit superior resistance to carbonizing processes.
-
Certification and Compliance Meeting the requirements of EN ISO 105-X01 demonstrates adherence to recognized international standards, supporting market access and customer confidence.
