A specimen of the textile (textiles of all kinds and in all forms) is exposed to the action of gaseous formaldehyde in a closed container. The change in colour of the specimen is assessed with the grey scale. This method is not suitable for assessing changes in colour which may occur during crease-resist finishing with urea-formaldehyde products, or in subsequent treatment of the dyeing with solutions of formaldehyde.

ISO grey scale for color change assessment (ISO 105-A02)

Specimen Preparation

Fabric specimens: 40 mm x 100 mm
Yarn specimens: knitted into fabric or formed into a wick of parallel lengths
Loose fibers: combed into a sheet supported on cotton fabric

Testing Procedure

Attach specimen to the frame hanging above the solution without contact
Introduce 15 ml of formaldehyde solution into the dish
Seal the jar and incubate at 20 ± 2°C (up to 27 ± 2°C for tropical climates) for 24 hours
Air the specimen in indirect light for 24 hours post-exposure
Assess and record color change per ISO grey scale criteria
