Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 10819:2013/A2:2022 is Amendment 2 to the international standard ISO 10819:2013, adopted by CEN as a European Standard. It updates requirements for measuring and evaluating vibration transmissibility of gloves at the palm of the hand (hand–arm vibration). The amendment adds normative provisions for assessing gaps in vibration‑reducing materials and a new Annex C test procedure. This standard supports conformity with Regulation (EU) 2016/425 on personal protective equipment (PPE).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Measurement and evaluation of glove performance with respect to vibration transmissibility at the palm (hand‑arm vibration protection).
- Gaps (lacks) in vibration‑reducing material: Defines what constitutes a gap and requires that gaps between thumb/finger sections and palm material shall not be greater than the thickness of the palm vibration‑reducing material along the length of the gap.
- Securing material: Vibration‑reducing inserts in thumb and fingers must be secured so they do not slip or move during normal glove use.
- Annex C (normative): Detailed test procedure for verification of gaps/interspaces:
- Material thickness measured under a defined pressure load on a solid, flat surface.
- A force of 4.5 N ± 0.4 N applied perpendicular to the surface during thickness measurement.
- Measurement sampling: at least five measuring points in the adapter grip area (25 readings total) and at least three measuring points per gap (with five readings each) to compute arithmetic means.
- For “open surface” glove constructions (e.g., nubs), an aluminium ring is used around measuring points (outside diameter 45 mm ± 1 mm; inside diameter 25 mm ± 0.5 mm; thickness 2 mm ± 0.4 mm).
- Regulatory link: Annex ZA maps the standard to essential health and safety requirements of Regulation (EU) 2016/425; compliance with normative clauses can confer presumption of conformity when cited in the Official Journal.
Applications
- Standardized laboratory testing of anti‑vibration gloves to determine palm transmissibility.
- Product development and quality control for glove manufacturers designing vibration‑reducing PPE.
- Certification and conformity assessment by notified bodies and test laboratories evaluating compliance with PPE regulations.
- Occupational safety professionals selecting gloves to mitigate hand–arm vibration exposure for tool operators.
Who should use this standard
- PPE manufacturers and R&D teams
- Independent testing laboratories and certification bodies
- Occupational hygienists and safety officers
- Regulators and procurement specialists specifying anti‑vibration gloves
