Overview
EN ISO 11296-9:2022 - Plastics piping systems for renovation of underground non-pressure drainage and sewerage networks - Part 9: Lining with a rigidly anchored plastics inner layer (ISO 11296-9:2022) is a CEN-adopted international standard that specifies requirements and test methods for relining existing non-pressure drainage and sewerage pipes. It covers systems that use a single rigid annulus of structural cementitious grout formed behind a plastics inner layer that remains in place as permanent formwork and is rigidly anchored to the grout.
This Part 9 is intended to be used in conjunction with ISO 11296‑1 and applies to plastics inner layers and grout systems with or without steel reinforcement. It does not cover the structural design of the lining system. Systems with multiple annuli are excluded (patent-controlled and outside scope).
Key topics and requirements
- Materials and product variants: Requirements for plastics inner layers (studded PE sheets, profiled PE or PVC‑U strips) and grout components.
- Material, geometric and mechanical characteristics: Tests and acceptance criteria for material properties, dimensions, joint integrity and physical performance at the “M” (manufactured) and “I” (installed) stages.
- Jointing and sealing: Methods for welding, mechanical jointing and seam sealing of inner layers to form continuous liners.
- Anchoring and fitness-for-purpose tests: Normative test methods including Annex A (pull-off test for anchoring strength of the plastics inner layer) and Annex B (installed-stage crushing strength test).
- Installation practice and quality control: Guidance on preparatory work, handling, equipment, installation, process-related inspections, reconnection of laterals, final testing and documentation.
- Marking and packaging: Requirements for traceability and marking of inner layers and grout materials.
Applications and users
Practical applications:
- Trenchless rehabilitation (relining) of buried non-pressure sewer and drainage mains and laterals.
- Situations where a permanent plastics formwork with a structural cementitious annulus is required to restore hydraulic capacity and service life.
Primary users:
- Pipe and liner manufacturers, grout suppliers
- Design and rehabilitation engineers
- Trenchless contractors and installation crews
- Municipal utilities and asset owners specifying rehabilitation works
- Testing laboratories and conformity assessment bodies
