This document specifies general conditions for the analysis of polymers using thermogravimetric techniques. It is applicable to liquids or solids. Solid materials can be in the form of pellets, granules or powders. Fabricated shapes reduced to appropriate specimen size can also be analysed by this method. This document establishes methods for the investigation of physical effects and chemical reactions that are associated with changes of mass. This document can be used to determine the temperature(s) and rate(s) of decomposition of polymers, and to measure at the same time the amounts of volatile matter, additives and/or fillers they contain. This document is applicable to measurements in dynamic mode (mass change versus temperature or time under programmed temperature conditions) or isothermal mode (mass change versus time at constant temperature). This document is applicable to measurements at different testing atmospheres, such as separation of decomposition in an inert atmosphere from oxidative degradation.
Abstract
Overview
SIST EN ISO 11358-1:2022 - titled Plastics - Thermogravimetry (TG) of Polymers - Part 1: General Principles - is the core international standard that outlines the general principles for analyzing polymer materials using thermogravimetric techniques. Published by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), this standard is applicable to a wide range of plastics, whether in liquid or solid states, including pellets, granules, powders, or suitably sized fabricated components.
Thermogravimetry (TG) is a powerful analytical method for measuring mass changes in materials as they are subjected to controlled temperature programs. SIST EN ISO 11358-1:2022 establishes essential guidelines for the preparation, calibration, and execution of TG tests, enabling assessment of phenomena such as decomposition, oxidation, volatilization, and the content of additives or fillers in polymers.
Key Topics
- Applicability: Suitable for both liquids and solid samples, including polymers in various forms (powders, pellets, granules, finished product specimens).
- Measurement Modes:
- Dynamic Mode: Mass change versus temperature or time with programmed temperature variations.
- Isothermal Mode: Mass change versus time at a stable, constant temperature.
- Atmosphere Control: Permits testing in different atmospheres-such as inert, oxidizing, or otherwise reactive-making it possible to distinguish between inert thermal decomposition and oxidative degradation.
- Calibration Procedures: Covers mass and temperature calibration methods to ensure reliable and accurate results, including the use of certified calibration materials and Curie-point calibration.
- Test Specimen Preparation: Addresses specific guidance for obtaining and conditioning specimens to ensure consistency and comparability of results.
- Data Interpretation: Provides instructions for graphical representation (TG curves), calculation of mass changes (gain or loss), and residue determination.
- Documentation: Specifies the reporting requirements, ensuring all relevant details of sample, method, and results are traceable and reproducible.
Applications
The practical value of SIST EN ISO 11358-1:2022 is evident in its wide adoption across industries involved in plastics manufacturing, formulation, and quality assurance. Key applications include:
- Material Characterization: Determining the thermal stability and decomposition temperatures of polymer materials.
- Composition Analysis: Quantifying volatile matter, additives, and fillers within a polymer matrix.
- Comparative Analysis: Evaluating thermal performance of different plastic types or formulations under standardized conditions.
- Process Development: Informing process parameters and product improvement through knowledge of thermal decomposition behaviors.
- Quality Control: Ensuring batch-to-batch consistency by monitoring material responses to controlled heating in different atmospheres.
TG analysis as outlined in this standard is vital for industries such as automotive, packaging, construction, electronics, and consumer goods, where polymer stability and composition are critical.
Related Standards
For comprehensive polymer and thermal analysis, SIST EN ISO 11358-1:2022 is supported by and interconnected with several related standards:
- ISO 11358 Series: Additional parts offering specific test methods and detailed procedures within the thermogravimetry of polymers.
- ISO 291: Specifies the standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing plastics, directly relevant to specimen preparation.
- ISO 472: Provides unified terminology and vocabulary for plastics.
- ISO 11357-1: Covers differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) for plastics-often used in parallel with TG.
- ASTM E1582: Standard test method for temperature calibration of thermogravimetric analyzers.
