Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 11782-2:2008/A1:2024 (ISO 11782-2:1998/Amd 1:2024) is a CEN-endorsed amendment to the international method for corrosion fatigue testing - Part 2: crack propagation testing using precracked specimens. The amendment (A1) updates and clarifies technical data for fracture-mechanics style testing in corrosive environments, and was approved by CEN on 11 December 2023 and published in 2024.
Key topics
- Scope and purpose: Defines requirements and reference data for measuring crack propagation (corrosion fatigue) using precracked specimens under laboratory conditions.
- Specimen geometries: Lists commonly used specimen types for corrosion-fatigue crack growth tests - SENB3 (three‑point single edge notch bend), SENB4 (four‑point single edge notch bend), CT (compact tension) and CCT (centre‑cracked tension).
- Specimen dimensions and tolerances: Provides standard specimen dimensions and machining tolerances (surface squareness/parallelism, notch positioning) to ensure repeatability across laboratories.
- Surface finish requirements: Specifies surface finish criteria for faces and notch-related surfaces to limit variability in crack growth behavior.
- Stress intensity factor (K) functions and Y values: Supplies tabulated stress intensity factor function (Y) values for the standard specimen geometries (e.g., detailed tables for SENB3 and SENB4) and gives closed-form approximations for use in fracture mechanics calculations.
- Document structure changes: The amendment repositions key tables (dimensional tolerances and Y-value tables) to improve clarity and usability of the standard.
Applications
- Materials testing laboratories performing corrosion fatigue crack propagation experiments.
- Fracture mechanics and corrosion engineers evaluating durability of metals and alloys in corrosive service.
- R&D teams validating new alloys, coatings or cathodic protection systems against corrosion‑fatigue failure.
- Quality assurance and certification bodies who require standardized test methods for material qualification and lifetime prediction.
Who should use this standard
- Corrosion testing labs and research institutions
- Materials scientists and mechanical engineers focused on fatigue and fracture
- Coating and surface-treatment manufacturers assessing protection effectiveness
- Regulatory and standards bodies harmonizing test methods across Europe
