Overview
EN ISO 11850:2011 (ISO 11850:2011) - published by CEN - is the type‑C international standard that sets general safety requirements for self‑propelled forestry machines and machines configured as forestry machines. It covers common hazards and hazardous situations for machine types defined in ISO 6814 (fellers, bunchers, delimbers, forwarders, log loaders, skidders, processors, harvesters, mulchers and multi‑function variants) when used as intended or under reasonably foreseeable misuse.
The standard is intended to be used alongside machine‑specific standards; it does not address all machine‑specific hazards and explicitly excludes some hazards (for example chain shot/chain breakage on the upper side of the bar, lifting operations, remote control operation, road safety and certain vibration/noise test setups). EN ISO 11850:2011 also supports conformity assessment under the EU Machinery Directive (see Annex ZA).
Key topics and requirements
EN ISO 11850:2011 organizes safety requirements and protective measures across practical machine areas, including:
- Operator station design, access and ergonomics (visibility, controls, seating, access routes)
- Safety distances, guards and shields to prevent contact with hazardous parts
- Controls and symbols - functional layout and standardized symbols for forestry machinery
- Braking, steering and stability requirements for safe operation
- Retrieval, tie‑down and machine‑lifting provisions for transport and recovery
- Automatic processing systems, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and electrical safety aspects
- Hydraulic systems, winches and fire risks - design and protective measures
- Noise and vibration - guidance on exposure considerations (measurement setups excluded)
- Maintenance access and storage places plus information requirements: operator’s manual, marking and safety signs
- Operator protective structures: references to ROPS/FOPS test standards
The standard cites many normative references (e.g., ISO 6814, ISO 8082/8083/8084, ISO 4413, ISO 2631‑1, ISO 3767‑4) to link general requirements to established test methods and component standards.
Practical applications and users
Who benefits from and uses EN ISO 11850:2011:
- Manufacturers and designers of forestry machines to build compliant products and integrate protective measures
- Safety and compliance engineers preparing technical files and CE conformity documentation
- Test laboratories and certification bodies verifying general safety features and operator protection
- Fleet managers and procurement teams specifying safety requirements for machines used in forestry operations
- Standards writers and regulatory authorities aligning national rules with EU Machinery Directive requirements
