ISO 12781-2:2011 specifies the complete specification operator for flatness of complete integral features only, i.e. geometrical characteristics of individual features of type plane.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 12781-2:2011 - Geometrical product specifications (GPS) - Flatness - Part 2: Specification operators - defines the complete specification operator for flatness of complete integral features (individual features of type plane). Published by CEN and identical to ISO 12781-2:2011, it establishes how to unambiguously specify the transmission band, stylus geometry and probing system elements that together define a flatness requirement for a surface feature.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Applies only to complete integral features (plane-type features) and specifies the ordered set of specification operations needed to make a unique flatness specification.
- Complete specification operator: A full, ordered set of unambiguous operators (per ISO 17450-2) that define the band of allowed deviations for a flat surface.
- Probing system: Requires a contacting probing system with a stylus tip as part of the operator.
- Stylus tip geometry: Theoretically exact geometry is a sphere.
- Probing force: Specified as 0 N to avoid elastic deformation effects in the specification operator.
- Filtering and extraction: Measurement always involves data extraction and filtering. Additional mean-line filters (Gaussian, spline, wavelet, etc.) or non-linear filters may be applied; the type and cut-off of filtering must be stated explicitly in the specification.
- Ambiguity warning: The standard does not set defaults for filter cut-off, probe tip radius or method of association (reference plane). If these operators are not explicitly stated in a specification, the specification is ambiguous and different suppliers may use different values when proving conformance.
- Measurement independence: The document does not prohibit any particular measuring method; it sets how the specification operators must be defined.
- Informative annexes: Guidance on harmonic content and extraction strategy (Annex A), extraction strategies (Annex B) and relationship to the GPS matrix model (Annex C).
Practical applications
- Defining clear, unambiguous flatness requirements on engineering drawings and product specifications.
- Creating inspection plans and CMM measurement programs for plane features.
- Quality control and acceptance testing in manufacturing, metrology labs and aerospace/automotive production where surface flatness is critical.
- Training material for metrologists and quality engineers on how to specify and evaluate flatness in a GPS-compliant way.
Who uses this standard
- Design and manufacturing engineers drafting flatness requirements
- Metrologists and measurement laboratories
- Quality managers and inspection planners
